The Top Five Baby Furniture

By JB Anthony

Much as we want to deny it, having a new baby means having additional expenses. With the many things that you would have to buy, you need to differentiate between pieces of baby furniture that are absolutely necessary and those that are mere fills. Here are the absolute top five baby furniture pieces that you should have in your nursery.

Crib

It goes without saying that whether you would like to co-sleep with your baby at night or not, you would still need to buy a good nursery crib. The crib is the only piece of baby furniture on which you may safely leave your baby unattended for a short period of time.

Cribs these days have been made based on government guidelines on product safety. Otherwise, crib models would never make it out on the market. You should still be extra careful and vigilant though. Even to this day, there are crib product recalls. The recalls usually happen when certain features are discovered to be potentially dangerous. Keep your ears and eyes peeled for online news on recent product recalls.

Portable Crib/ Playpen

Having a nursery baby crib is one thing, while having a portable baby crib or a portable playpen is another. Portables like these would come in handy for parents who would like to enjoy family trips and picnics with their babies.

Similar to nursery cribs, any standard portable cribs are also made with safety features in mind. Do remember though that like standard cribs, portables may also be recalled if they have features that may still be improved on. Some parents also use portable cribs as their main nursery crib. It is probably safest though not to use portables as all around cribs.

Cabinet/ Changing Table

Of course you can't do without some space to store all those baby diapers, clothes and miscellaneous items. A sturdy cabinet with back brackets would be a good piece of furniture to store baby items in. To save you some cash, you should consider buying a baby cabinet that can double as a changing table. This way, you only have to buy one piece of furniture that can perform two functions. A good design would be a piece with a changing table on top and open shelves or drawers below to hold baby items. The top storage compartment could hold diapers and other changing articles to make baby changing an easier chore.

High Chair

Feeding time can get especially messy as soon as your baby finds out that he can sit and move around! You don't want to forever keep chasing after your baby. This is why you need a good high chair for baby meal time. Pick one with a wide sturdy base to prevent tipping accidents.

Toy Box

Training your toddler to keep his toys after playing should start as soon as he knows how to pick stuffs up. This is why it is probably a good idea for you to get your child a toy box. Teach him to store his toys after play so that he can carry over the habit until adulthood. Pick a toy box that doesn't have a heavy lid. It should also ideally have a lock in place spring to prevent the lid from falling on your child. Other safe designs include the open storage piece that is easy for your baby to use.

Baby Nursery Bedding Choices

By Alice Ault

It's a good idea to begin planning for your baby's crib bedding even before your baby is born. To start with, don't be misled by the argument that you cant plan for babys crib bedding without knowing if its going to be a girl or a boy. Its true parents want different patterns, colours and designs for girl and boy babies. Please dont worry about this because there are many bedding choices and even nursery color options available in the market which are fine for both girls and boys.

It is easy for parents " especially those choosing cot bedding for the first time " to worry about things that are of lesser importance than vital ones. Bear in mind that while we adults spend an average of eight hours per day, i.e. twenty-four hours, in bed, baby spends almost all of the twenty-four hours in bed!

The first thing to consider is Safety. We tend to forget the simple fact that baby can't say if it feels uncomfortable. We parents must think ahead and make sure the baby bedding is safe from all aspects. For instance, it isn't true that very soft beds are most comfortable for baby. The bedding should be slightly firm. Also, desist from piling the crib with cuddly toys and teddy bears and pillows. Adults may find them colorful and lovely but not baby. These can turn into hazards because baby could accidentally suffocate. Keep the cot clear of all pillows and soft toys!

Tucking baby into a heavy blanket to keep cold draughts away is equally foolish. The normal thrashing of babys limbs can bring such blankets over its face and interfere with breathing.

Next, plan to keep your babys nursery stocked with bedding essentials. Its hard to talk exact numbers needed; But blankets and crib sheets sometimes have to be changed several times a day. Cotton sheets are best and I've already mentioned about using light blankets. A tip: check the thread count of the crib sheets you buy.

Our advice is to avoid plastic altogether including for baby comforters. Non-biodegradable material is a strict no-no for babys crib. These may trigger allergies. The best thing is to use cotton as crib bedding.

Last but by no means the least, you must ensure the Durability of babys cot bedding. As you know, babys going to spend most of his time in the cot. Apart from babys cot, plan the nursery well. This can contribute to baby growing up as a happy child.

Lets get back once more to babys cot. To recap, lets picture baby lying comfortably on a soft but firm mattress covered with cotton cot sheet and tucked into a light yet warm blanket of pretty design " not a drab pastel uni-color please! Babies don't need a pillow and shouldn't have one until they are over 12 months old.. Similarly, babys crib wont be laden with soft toys of various shapes, sizes, and colors.

After all of this, you can rest assured that your bundle of joy is sleeping safely.

Why You Should Choose Cot Beds

By Alice Ault

Cot beds are basically cots which are wider and longer than a standard size cot. Often parents choose to buy a cot bed because they convert into a junior bed - that is a toddler sized bed - after their baby has outgrown the cot.

A junior bed is smaller than an adult bed. As a general guide, a cot bed will normally last until your child is about 3-4 years old, depending on their size.

One thing to remember though is that you may need to check the sizes of the cot bedding you buy. A cot bed is larger than a standard sized cot so cot bed bedding, including cot bed duvets and cot bed sheets, take this into account and are made larger to fit properly.

Also bear in mind that cot beds do not usually have drop sides and not all models enable parents to select different mattress positions. Not having drop sides means it can be more difficult to get a baby in and out of their cot.

We think that a cot bed can be a useful way to bridge the gap between a cot and an adult bed. You don't have to be concerned about your child's sleeping arrangements until they are almost school age.

Cot beds don't usually cost more than a cot so a cot bed can be a money saving option too as you wont need to buy a separate junior bed. Cot beds can provide a roomy sleeping solution for both toddlers and older babies.

Your home should be baby proofed during pregnancy and should be ready to go once your baby enters the world. As protector of your child, it is important to baby proof one's home to keep them safe in the place they'll be spending most of their infant days.

There are so many responsibilities when caring for a baby that a list would produce pages and pages of things to do and not to do. At times, it may seem overwhelming, but rest assured there are many parents out there like you, including your own, that were able to produce well rounded and healthy individuals like yourselves.

Baby proofing one's home can increase a baby's safety tenfold. It won't be the answer to all your safety needs but it is a step in the right direction.

A baby infant cannot defend itself in a world like ours, which is why it's especially important for the parents, the guardians, of the child to take responsibility when caring for and protecting their bundle of joy.

Nature ensures a child's safety in this scary world. Of course this counts on the parents being healthy. Is it time to begin baby proofing your home? I can give you a few pointers right off the bat. Place plastic covers on all open outlets.

Helpful Hints for Creative Invitations for a Fun Baby Shower

By Edie Mindell

Giving out invitations for your shower should be something exciting that you look forward to. Although traditional "Its a Boy"and "Its a Girl"invitations are a safe and classic choice, creative invitations are bound to leave your guests itching with anticipation to attend your shower. Today, there are numerous companies that specialize in creative invitations for all types of events.

A "message in a bottle" invitation is a clever way to announce the birth of your baby. These can be purchased from a company or can even be made at home with materials that can be bought at a local craft store. A typical "message in a bottle"invitation is composed of a decorative paper with all the invite details, rolled up and placed inside of a plastic or glass bottle. To customize this idea in order to fit a baby shower, use baby bottles instead of regular plastic or glass bottles, and throw in some colorful confetti.

Personalized candy bars or chocolate boxes are another new trend that has spread around the United States rapidly. These make great baby shower invitations! You can alter and personalize the design of the wrapper to match your baby shower theme. Include all the event details like the date, time, place, and RSVP number. A company can professionally make these invitations, or, you can use a candy bar invitation wrapper template that can be found online to design your invitations.

Cute baby shoes can also be used as adorable little invitations. You can purchase tiny baby booties in the color and style of your choice and place decorative note card invitations inside of the baby shoe. Baby shoe invitations are relatively new and uncommon, but make lovely and charming invitations.

With new technologies emerging, it has become easier to create unconventional invitations like the "baby picture"invitation. When expectant mothers get an ultrasound at the doctor, they can ask for an ultrasound picture. This picture can be used to design clever invitations with a picture of the baby inside of the mothers womb. Many people find this moving and heartwarming.

Another type of invitation that has become possible to create with technology is the e-mail invitation, otherwise known as e-cards or e-invitations. There are numerous different types of e-mail invitations that you simply choose and customize to make it your own. Then, e-mail the invitation to all your guests. For this type of invitation, an e-mail list will be necessary instead of a conventional, mailing address list.

Some more common ideas are invitations cut in the shape of baby bibs, baby bottles, diapers, and other baby-related shapes. These are simple, classy, and chic, and can be bought in a party store or can be designed by you. Now, you can even buy musical baby shower invitations.

The list goes on and on for creative baby shower invitations. There are no right or wrong ways to invite people to your baby shower. These ideas are sure to make long-lasting memories.

Celebrity Baby Showers Can Be Elaborate or Simple: Anything Goes

By Edie Mindell

Your baby shower is one of the most prized memories that any mother can have. Just as everyday people make the most of this once in a lifetime moment, celebrities are known for making the most of this occasion and having some of the most grand and luxurious baby showers.

Splurging is common among celebrities, especially if it is going to be for their new coming baby. Celebrities will do and pay anything and everything for their little ones. Icons such as Heidi Klum, Christina Aguilera, Nicole Richie, and Gwen Stefani, have held some of the most splendid baby showers of our time.

In 2004, Heidi Klum held a Mexican-themed baby shower for her daughter, Leni, in New York City. The party was catered by Dos Caminos Restaurant, and was full of yummy food and treats! Although the shower was reported to be a small celebration with 25 guests, Klum splurged and made the event a great one. Heidi Klum gave each of her guests a posh tote full of fine beauty products, a boutique gift certificate, and Victorias Secret pajamas; she made her baby shower all about giving, instead of receiving.

Christina Aguileras friends and family threw her baby shower in Malibu, California. According to Touch Weekly Magazine, guests brought blue, boy-themed baby gifts. Aguilera registered at Bel Bambini, a chic baby store located in West Hollywood. Baby bottles, diaper bags, and clothes were on the reported list of items in the registry. Among the gifts that she received from the upscale baby boutique were a blue Loved Mom Guitar shirt, a Cariboo bassinet with blue dot bedding, and Trumpette Johnny's socks.

Nicole Richie held her luxurious baby shower alongside Joel Madden at the Beverly Hills Hotel. The couple was reported to have a Wizard of Oz-themed baby shower. They even had a yellow brick road at the celebration, which was lined with candy, ruby slipper centerpieces, and a live band that performed the songs of the classic tale. The event also raised money for the new Richie Madden Childrens Foundation, which the couple has recently established.

Gwen Stefani and Gavin Rossdale had the most glamorous baby shower that any musician could have. The shower was held at a friends mansion in Los Angeles, and was themed after Gwens clothing line, L.A.M.B. The theme cleverly featured pink lambs. David Arquette and Christina Applegate are two of the many guests that attended Stefanis celebration.

Stefani and Rossdale gave out truffles and flowers as gifts, and received an estimated value of $35,000 in gifts. Some of the gifts were a fancy bedding set, a beautiful chandelier, and a gold necklace. These were just a few of the many deluxe gifts that Stefanis baby received at the shower.

Celebrities seem to go all out these days when it comes to pampering their babies. The more unique and original the baby shower is the better. Regardless of your budget, making your shower a one-of-a-kind event should be a priority for every mother-to-be, celebrity or not.

How to Choose Nursery Curtains

By Alice Ault

We know you are probably thinking "What's the big deal about nursery curtains?" Firstly, they are very important to consider. There are things that you would need to think about before you decide the types of nursery curtains that you would put in your baby's nursery.

The type of curtains that you choose should be well thought out whenever much of the nursery is finished. There are some qualities to consider in the type of nursery curtains that you will choose.

First of all, we want the nursery curtains to match the rest of the room, and probably the bedding too. They don't have to be anything that is over fancy. However, if you have a little girl and the room is already girly, you want them to match the rest of the room. Color and design do matter when you are trying to chose nursery curtains.

The other thing that you will want to consider is the thickness of the curtains. Are they substantial enough to where you can't see anything through them? Are they stopping draughts from entering through during the winter months? These are questions that you want to ask before you make your final choice. We also are looking for quality because we want to keep the same nursery curtains all throughout the baby's childhood.

Another thing to consider is the curtain length. Think about it, the baby will get older and will be able to reach the curtain to bring it down. That is of course, if we buy it a little too long. Remember that we want to keep these curtains for quite a long time. It is suggested to purchase curtains that are not too long so that the baby can't pull on them when he is learning to walk.

With the many choices in nursery curtains out there, we hope we covered the bases as far as the type of curtain to buy. Nursery decor should feel homey for the baby and at the same time look attractive and be of good quality.

Fun and Exciting Games and Prizes Make the Baby Shower Memorable

By Edie Mindell

Baby shower games can be very entertaining and exciting for both the expectant mother and the guests. Choosing or making prizes should be equally enjoyable for the host of the baby shower. Prizes are pretty much up to the host to decide on, and can range from homemade, personalized gifts to store-bought presents. When it comes to selecting the types of prizes that you will use for the baby shower, keep in mind that creativity is key.

A sweet-and-simple idea for prizes that will suit anyones budget is a candy baby bottle. For this, all you will need are empty baby bottles, candy, and ribbon. Fill empty baby bottles with candies and chocolates, close the baby bottle with the top, and add your own decorative touch with ribbon or other accessories, if desired. Dont be hesitate to add your own style to the bottles and personalize them"unique gifts are the best ones!

T-shirts can also be personalized and used as gifts and/or prizes. You can design your own T-shirts and have them made for your shower. This makes for a cute gift and is a wonderful keepsake. T-shirts have recently become very popular for events like baby showers.

Candles and bath treats are amongst the most popular prizes for women. Women seem to love anything and everything that has to do with spa treatments and that relates to pampering themselves. Most women love aromatic candles, gift soaps, lotions, and body splashes. These will definitely be a hit at your baby shower.

Another thing most women cannot live without is chocolate. A beautiful box of fine and exquisite chocolates makes an excellent gift that all your guests will definitely enjoy.

Gift cards and gift certificates are a recent trend that is a crowd favorite! General, broad department stores like Macys, Target, and JC Penney are good choices for gift cards. Restaurants and coffee shops like Olive Garden, T.G.I. Fridays, and Starbucks are great picks, too. Dont forget about video rental stores and electronic stores like Blockbuster Video and Best Buy; they are top picks among young adults today.

Coffee mugs filled with candy, picture frames, and other household items are a favorite among housewives and people interested in interior design. Stationary kits and personalized journals are cute and simple, and make wonderful gifts. Another favorite for women of all ages is a flower arrangement or bouquet.

If you enjoy baking scrumptious desserts, make homemade cookies or brownies and decorate them according to your showers colors and theme. Wrap them in a clever and unique way, and dont forget to personalize them. This idea is simple, convenient, and easy on your pocket.

Prizes make the games and activities more fun and exciting by adding an adequate amount of competition, along with motivation and enthusiasm. Gifts and prizes make everyone feel special and proud. Whether you choose to make your gifts or buy them, personalize them and add your special touch. Be fun, be creative, and most importantly, be you!

Baby Shower Games - Essential Activities for the Most Fun

By Edie Mindell

Some of the most important and memorable experiences of a baby shower are the baby-themed games that are characteristic of the American baby shower. Games and activities make up a big part of the fun and excitement in the celebration that will welcome your new coming baby into the world. When it comes to picking the right games for your shower, be sure to center your activities on the overall theme of the party. Consider the number of guests that have been invited, your budget, and the location of the baby shower, in order to choose the games that will be best suited for your event. Creating a combination of traditional, timeless games and new, original activities is always a good way to go to add festivity to the segment of the shower whereby Mom opens up all the newborn gifts.

Games can be classic and general, or more specific and tied to your theme. One of the most universal baby shower games that everyone seems to love is called "Dont Say Baby." At the beginning of the baby shower, each guest is given a string with a pacifier on it, which he or she ties on his or her neck as a necklace. Throughout the course of the baby shower, nobody is allowed to say the word, "baby." Whoever slips and says "baby," risks losing their pacifier; any person who hears someone say the forbidden word is entitled to take their pacifier and add it to their necklace. Even when she opens up a newborn baby gift, no one can exclaim how neat the baby gift is. At the end of the baby shower, whoever collects the most pacifiers on their necklace is the winner of the game.

Another good classic activity is "Guess Mommys Belly Size." For this game, you will need yarn or string, and a pair of scissors. Each guest proceeds to pull and cut the yarn or string to the size they believe that the mommys tummy is. After everyone has estimated the size of the mommy-to-bes stomach, measure the actual size of the belly, and cut the string or yarn to match that length. The person whose string is the closest in size to the string that was cut to mommys real tummy measurement is the winner.

A fun and amusing game that is always a hit in baby showers is a "Blindfolded Baby Food Race." In this game, you will need a few volunteers to act as the "mommies" in this game, and matching pairs to act as "babies." Mommies will be blindfolded and the babies will sit on their laps. When the clock starts, the blindfolded mommies have to feed the babies as quickly and efficiently as they can. To make the activity more pleasant for the "baby" volunteers, it is important to purchase yummy, fruit-flavored baby foods. Otherwise, your guests will be making funny faces as they try to gulp down peas and asparagus flavored puree. The mommy-and-baby team that finishes the fastest is the winning pair.

Games add fun, spirit, and laughs to your celebration that are sure to make lifetime memories that will never be forgotten. Be sure to get small gifts for the winners of the games with anticipation. The prizes that you buy for the event are completely up to you, depending on your shower theme and budget. Whatever the case may be, be sure to make the game-planning and prize-choosing process enjoyable and fun! The whole event, including games, food and opening all the unique baby gifts for the new little prince should be a memorable one for everyone.

What You Should Know About Secondhand Cribs

By JB Anthony

Unlike decades ago, new parents can now choose from a wide variety of new crib models. However, there are still some parents who would go for a secondhand crib. Before you think of doing the same thing, you should take note of a couple of concerns regarding secondhand cribs.

Why Secondhand

Before looking into the points concerning secondhand cribs, it is important to first look into why people pick used cribs in the first place. The first reason is attachment. There are some families out there who simply do not wish to dispose of an antique crib simply because it has been passed down from generation to generation. There is a certain sense of continuity and a link to relatives from the past by using a family crib.

Some parents also choose secondhand cribs because they are cheaper. Parents who have more than one kid, are earning only an average income and who have other expenses to worry about would want to get a bargain on a piece of furniture that a baby will eventually outgrow. Some parents even openly promote the use of secondhand cribs.

The Problem with Secondhand

The first obvious problem with a secondhand crib is its age. Just like everything else, a crib does not last forever. A crib that has been kept for too long may already have defective parts. It could therefore easily collapse, break and injure your baby in some way.

A second essential concern with used cribs is that they may have been manufactured at a time before government safety standards were put up. New cribs have to be made with specific measurements and designs that are standard compliant. A secondhand crib could therefore have unsafe features such as over high side posts, wide spaces in between slats and head board cut outs.

A third concern regarding secondhand cribs is that they could have been manufactured after government standards were set up but they could be recalled models. There are online accounts of parents who buy secondhand cribs and do not know that the model has already been recalled. A recalled model usually has design flaws that could endanger your baby.

Choosing a Secondhand Crib

Of course, there are parents who would still opt for used cribs. If you really insist on getting a used crib then make sure that you pick the right one. Here are some tips on choosing a secondhand crib.

- Make sure that the model has not been recalled. Ask for the brand and model type and then search online for recall information. - Check all of the crib parts and ask the seller how long the crib has been around. A very old crib is probably not worth the risk. - Buy only from a trusted source. Make sure that you know the seller and you are certain that you are not being short changed. There are some parents who think they are buying from a trusted source like neighbors but still suffer from consequences later on. - It would be better if your secondhand crib still has labels and marks that will give information on the manufacturer and will provide relevant warnings. - If you can help it, don't scrimp. It is still safer to buy a new crib.

Helpful Tips for Planning a Memorable Baby Shower for Mom-To-Be

By Edie Mindell

Today, baby shower etiquette has evolved from a set of rules and procedures to a few flexible guidelines from which to base the structure of your shower on. Although there are no specific rules on how to host your baby shower, there are some basic rules of thumb that will help you have an amazing shower that will be comfortable and enjoyable for you and your guests. This article will answer all of the questions that you may have in mind and will address the issues at hand that matter when planning a baby shower.

Who should host the baby shower?

Years ago, the tradition was for non-related friends or co-workers to host the shower. However, today, many expectant mothers like for their own mothers and sisters to plan and host the event. The decision of who should host of the shower is completely up to you. In todays society, anyone from the mommys sister, to her mom, to her best friend, to her co-worker, is acceptable. There is no right or wrong host. The important part here is that whoever decides to host the baby shower be close to the mother and know her very well, in order to plan and execute the event according to her taste and preferences.

When is it appropriate to have the baby shower?

Typically, a baby shower is held about one to two months before the babys due date. This is a good time because the mother will know the gender of the baby by this date, and it will be easier to shop for gifts knowing if the baby will be a boy or a girl. One or two months before the babys birth date also gives the mother time to buy the items that she did not receive or that she is missing, before the babys arrival. Some people prefer to have the shower a few weeks after the baby is born. This is also perfectly acceptable, and completely up to you.

Where should the shower take place?

Depending on the number of guests, hosts can choose to have the shower at a house, a restaurant, or a banquet hall. The location of the baby shower is the hosts decision, and is dependant on the budget, too. When choosing the place for the celebration, consider the size of your audience, the mommys preferences, and the total costs.

Can I invite men to the baby shower?

Whether you decide to have an all-women baby shower or a co-ed baby shower is up to you. Years ago, most women had women-only showers, but today, co-ed baby showers have become increasingly popular. This gives the daddy-to-be, his friends, and male members of the family a chance to participate in the celebration.

When making decisions about the baby shower, it is critical to cater to the mommy-to-be and her preferences. There are no set dos and donts in todays society. More and more taboos have been broken, and many things have become appropriate and acceptable, as long as the expectant parents are happy with the celebration.

Is My DNA Paternity Test Correct

By PTC Labs

I CAN'T BE THIS CHILD'S FATHER!!!

Is it possible for a paternity test to have an incorrect answer? How can that happen?

There are no government regulations for performing paternity testing. One company issues tests that say my baby, yes or my baby, no. There is no genetic information provided and no indication that they actually performed testing. Heads he is yours and tales he isnt. Who knows how they determine paternity. You cant tell from their report if a DNA test was performed.

You can also obtain a test result from the blood of an expectant mother. The test is not accurate and is extremely unreliable, but if you are willing to give the company about $1,000 then they are willing to give you an answer. It is very likely to be the wrong answer, but you will have an answer. Even when a mother, child and alleged father are tested, we have come across incorrect tests from this company. They have been providing unreliable and incorrect test results for more than 6 years. It is unlikely that they will stop anytime soon.

The agency that accredits paternity laboratories is the American Association of Blood Banks (AABB). Accreditation is voluntary. It is not necessary to be accredited in order to perform a paternity test. In fact, if you look on the internet, it will appear that nearly everyone advertising is AABB accredited. It is not true. There are only about 40 accredited labs in the United States. Anyone can say they are accredited even if they are not. The only way to determine if a laboratory is accredited is to check the AABB website at www.aabb.org for their list of accredited laboratories.

AABB accreditation does not guarantee a correct result. AABB simply determines that a laboratory follows acceptable procedures in testing and tests to a bare minimum level of discrimination. The precautions and levels of testing beyond that are left up to each individual laboratory.

It is very possible to obtain an incorrect result when testing with an unaccredited laboratory and even the largest accredited laboratory touts a handful of incorrect results per year. Some AABB accredited laboratories go to great lengths to ensure the correct result on each and every test while other meet the bare minimum paternity testing standards set by AABB.

Searching the internet, it may appear that there are hundreds of paternity laboratories. Many of the companies advertising on the internet are not laboratories at all. They are resellers who sell you a test then shop around for the least expensive place to have the test performed. Their sites look great. They appear to be in laboratories with scientists working diligently at performing paternity testing. They may be sitting in their living room collecting your money. If they are not on the AABB list, then they are not an accredited laboratory and most likely are not a laboratory at all.

An incorrect paternity test may be the result of fraud, poor laboratory procedures, or inadequate amounts of testing. DNA test results are only as reliable as the laboratory performing the test.

The best way to protect against an incorrect test is to utilize an AABB accredited laboratory that guarantees high levels of discrimination. If you have received what you believe to be an incorrect results, you should have a second test. The test should be performed by an AABB accredited laboratory that guarantees results.

Why Choose Organic Baby Clothes?

By Alison Rothwell

Cotton grown without the use of pesticides and chemicals is used for organic baby clothes.

I think organic cotton is better for clothing because of environmental as well as humanitarian reasons; and organic cotton is better for sensitive baby skin and for eczema sufferers.

Pesticides used on non-organic cotton account for 16% of the globe's pesticides due to the fact that it uses more chemicals per unit area than all other crops. ("Picking Cotton Carefully, Institute of Science in Society, March 2007).

These harmful pesticides cause water and air pollution, polluting the land, killing plants and animals, and causing illness and even death for farmers and workers.

It is estimated that 20,000 annual deaths in developing countries are related to the pesticides used on cotton crops, since those pesticides have a relatively high level of toxicity. In 2000 24 people, including 11 children under 10 years old, died in the West African state of Benin from poisoning resulting from cotton pesticides.

Growing organic cotton without chemicals means that not only is it safer for the farmers and workers who grow and harvest the crops but the land is not damaged by over use of chemicals and the farming is more sustainable in the long term.

Crop rotation and use of natural fertilizers replace chemical and man-made fertilizers in organic farming. Natural pest control, using one species to eat the species destroying the crop, is used instead of harmful chemical alternatives.

Besides being better for the environment, organic cotton is quite often purchased from the farm or a co-operative. This means the crops yield a better, more fair income for the farmers.

Its frightening but around 150 grams of pesticides and fertilisers are used to grow the cotton for just one T-shirt " this is the equivalent of a cup of sugar (Soil Association).

But when you chose to buy organic cotton clothing you are helping to reduce this chemical cocktail on our planet. In addition to the environmental and health benefits of choosing organic cotton there is also the fact that it feels so much nicer next to your skin. The cotton fibres are longer and you can feel the luxurious quality.

Parenting Tips: How To Find A Sitter

By Rashel Dan

As much as you want to, you can't be around your children all the time. You may have to work or attend functions as a couple. In both cases, you may need to leave the kids with someone trustworthy.

If you want the peace of mind, the best way is to find the best sitter. The process of getting a sitter however probably is not that simple. What do parents have take note of when picking a sitter?

Start as Soon as Possible

If you have plans of going out, find a sitter as early as possible. This means planning all your night outs, breaks, work commitments ahead of time. This is to ensure that when you decide to study your sitter options, you have more time to study qualifications and be discriminating.

Study All Your Options

Naturally, you want to get the best sitter to ensure your kids' safety. A relevant tip therefore is to look at all your options. You can look for sitting services in the paper. Just make sure that the services you choose are ones which conduct some form of background check on their sitters. Another good parenting tip on this aspect is to advertise with your local community organizations or groups. One of the best thing to do however is to ask close relatives and friends to recommend some good sitters.

Ask For a Lot of Things

When you're done looking for sitters and there are already applicant for the position, start a good screening process. Ask the right questions. Many highly recommend asking for references and actually checking and calling on those references. You should also consider a lot of questions during your interview with potential sitters.

Know and inquire about length of experience as a sitter, ages of kids looked after, training in CPR or other relevant training. Make sure the applicant sitters know what they should do during emergency situations like the child choking or falling down the stairs.

Take the Time to Observe

Take the time to observe how the candidate sitter interacts with the kids. One parenting tip is to see if the sitter seems naturally comfortable with the kids and vice versa. Another thing to do for additional safety is to install nanny cameras.

Ask the Kids

Always talk to your kids about their experience with their baby sitter. You can ask them to describe what they did that day, if they enjoyed being with their sitter, what new things their sitter taught them and what other things their sitter has been doing. Be sensitive to such warning signs as discomfort among your kids when you ask them sitter related questions and bumps and bruises in inconspicuous parts of your child's body.

Methods To Find The Perfect Baby Boy Name

By Chris Channing

Having a baby boy is a very rewarding experience, one that is one of a kind to both parents and their immediate family. With all the planning required for the baby, there is also the prospect of having to name the baby boy. There are many choices to choose from, but the process isn't impossible as it would seem.

In many cases, we rely on instinct to make decisions for us. This can be the case in naming a baby boy, since each parent will likely have a few names they already prefer based on experiences they have had growing up. An example would with childhood heroes, in which an association with a name is made and one's feelings towards a specific name is increased. It's nice to have some initial suggestions such as this, but do look for other possibilities and listen to one's partner for suggestions.

There are publications that can help in the process, both online and offline. Baby name books are available at most department stores and book stores. The benefit of buying a book is that all the information can be obtained about a name- such as the origin, common use, and so on instantly. There are free Internet resources that do the same thing, but finding information can sometimes pose a problem.

Interestingly enough, there are some philosophies that claim a name can have a very large impact on how a baby boy is raised and who he turns into. Some say this is just another off-brand science such as horoscopes would be to astrology, but it's well worth checking into things such as the Kabalarian philosophy, among others.

Baby boy names shouldn't be limited by ethnicity or location. Being diverse and straying away from the common "John" or "Tom" can make one's son truly unique and unlike others in the community. Some even borrow names that are sometimes associated with girl names- such as "Alex" or "Sam." Either way, it's nice to get away from the normal and think of something truly creative.

Ultimately, the right name is going to be found though a joint operation between both parents. Baby books, online resources, and philosophies are all helpful in choosing a name- but in the end the decision comes down to the mother and father and what their own personal experiences have told them to name the baby. Just try to make it a fun positive experience, and not a negative one that spurs arguments over what to name a baby boy.

In Conclusion

As a last note of advice, be sure to decide the baby boy's name as soon as possible in order to avoid arguments or confusion later on in the pregnancy. Having a baby is stressful enough without the confusion of deciding on a baby name, so make a choice as early as possible.

Cruising With A Baby? - Don't Leave Home Without These Items!

By Brooklyn Sterritt

Our recent Caribbean cruise on Crown Princess ship with our 10 month old daughter was fantastic. We enjoyed it so much that we are starting to plan for another cruise in about a year.

Planning for your trip is essential. There are so many things to consder and travel with a baby means that you need to pack more than you would without a baby. Here are the things that we thing you absolutely have to have when going on a cruise with a young baby.

1. Probably the most important thing for the cruise is taking a comfortable stroller that is foldable. Having a stroller makes it easy to get around on the ship and in the airport when travelling to the cruise. We used the stroller for morning walks on the ship, for taking our daughter to meals on the ship, and in the evening we bathed her, put her in pyjamas and then put her in the stroller as we enjoyed the excitement of walking around the ship in the evening. She fell asleep every evening in her stroller.

2. You cannot be without diapers. You can calculate how many diapers you will need on the trip by keeping track for a week or so before your trip of how many diapers your child uses in a typical day. Then simply multiply that number by the number of days in your vavcation. You also might want to consider waiting to buy the diapers in the city that you board your ship. That way you won't have to worry about checking them as luggage on your air flight (if your trip includes air travel). Our ship left from Ft Lauderdale Florida, and we had time between our flight arrival and the time to board the ship. We took a cab from the airport to a Kmart store and purchased the diapers and some other baby supplies before getting another taxi to the ship.

3. Take some swim diapers. All cruise ships have a baby/toddler pool. Babies and toddlers are allowed in the pool if they are toilet-trained or if they wear swim diapers. Our daughter went into the kiddies pool every day - and she always wore swim diapers.

4. Our baby is on formula so we brought on board with us enough formula for the cruise. We opted to bring powdered formula since it is less bulky than formula that is already mixed. Again, we didn't bring it from home, we purchased the required formula in Florida when we bought our diapers. Keep in mind that any formula entering the ship must be sealed & in the original container.

5. We wanted to make it easy and safe to make our baby's bottles so we took a kettle (with a thermostat controlled shut-off) with us so that we could boil water and know that the water was safe to mix with the powdered formula.

6. Baby's food is obviously very important. We brought a formula dispenser with us. We did this so that we could fill several bottles with clean water and when it was time for a bottle for our daughter we just had to pour the pre-measured formula into the water and give the bottle a shake.

7. Scented bags for dirty diapers. Because you will not have a diaper dispenser for dirty diapers with you - taking a supply of these bags will help reduce any bad odours in your room. They can be purchased at a dollar store or Babies r Us.

8. Soap for baby's bath. Most cruise cabins don't have a bathtub - ours did not. What we did was plug the drain on the shower and put enough water in the shower in order to give our baby her bath.

9. Sun Cabana - if your cruise is taking you to a warm climate like the Caribbean purchase a very lightweight sun cabana before your trip. You can use it when you visit the beach during the cruise. Keeps baby comfortable and protected from the sun. If you rent a cabana on the beach it will cost about $80 to $100.

10. Zip lock bags - these are great for everything - snack holders, put really dirty/soiled clothes away until you get home. Use for things that leak - (ex. medicine). Use the bags on the ship to pack bibs, spoons to go for dinner so when they are dirty you can throw in the bag & clean when you get back to your room.

There are more items to consider - but these are the top ten items that you can't leave home without.

How To Look For a Child Available for Adoption

By Febbe Wallace

Foster parenting can be quite difficult. For some cases, foster kids may come from abusive environments. Being thrust into an entirely new household, away from their families is both stressful and unnerving. Becoming emotionally attached is one temptation for foster parents who are there simply to make a child available for adoption or return to his or her birth parent/s.

Foster care is usually a collaboration between the foster care agencies and adoption agencies who makes sure that the child is well-taken cared of. Keeping the best interests of the child and working to making a child available for adoption into a loving, caring and permanent home is the ultimate goal of foster care.

Foster parents play an important role by maintaining communication lines with adoption agencies who are screening potential adoptive parents. By working closely with them, foster parents may keep the agency updated on the emotional wellbeing of a child available for adoption.

Adoption agencies have two specific roles to play in foster care. First, they the state-authorized entity granted custody and care for any specific child available for adoption. Secondly, prior to adoption, they are responsible for keeping the child in a safe and loving environment, while they evaluate potential adoptive parents, and whether that family is capable of taking care of the child's needs. Adoption agencies and foster parents work hand in hand so that not one child may feel the pangs of neglect and emotional distance that their circumstances have left them with.

A child available for adoption is often placed in the care of the state child welfare system, before being adopted. Sometimes, the court assign public or private adoption agencies with the challenge of making a child available for adoption into permanent and caring homes. More often than not, foster children are products of broken homes or abusive family environments. The courts strip parents of their parental and legal rights, either for abusive home environments, neglect, or even sexual abuse.

The children are then taken under the custody of adoption agencies. While the agencies select permanent homes for these children, they are cared for in foster homes. During introductions, foster parents are made aware of what the child has undergone. Overcoming a child's instinct to withdraw from his or her environment is the biggest challenge for any foster parent. And this is crucial for a child available for adoption. Foster homes often begin working with children by helping them with their problems and easing them out of their shells and helping them to become more comfortable forming bonds with the rest of the foster family.

Turning the child over to the care of adoptive parents is perhaps the most difficult part in most foster parents. Many foster parents have stories of the emotional goodbyes, especially when a foster child has become attached to them and does not want to leave them. But all foster parents know that that there is the reward for all their hard work: Being able to teach love to a young child and receiving the same kind of affection in return.

If you're interested in becoming a foster parent, check with your local adoption agency and inquire about the requirements for foster parenting. It is emotional, educational and rewarding experience; to make a child available for adoption by simply showing him or her that someone cares for them even in their most darkest times.

Finding the Perfect Gift for a New Baby

By Charlene Sim

You're only born once, and the birth of a new life is a reason for celebration for the close friends and relatives of the new parents. A newborn baby has an entire lifetime to look forward to, and unlimited potential. The event of a child's birth is celebrated in many different ways, according to individual custom and tradition. Many families will create their own traditions to commemorate the arrival of a newborn.

In the U.S., the pending arrival of a baby is most often celebrated by having a baby shower~. This is a party during which friends and family shower the expectant mother with gifts for her and her baby. This tradition started in the early twentieth century, at which time the gifts were mostly handmade. Modern-day baby gifts run the gamut from blankets, clothing, plush toys, to bath products.

A baby shower isn't only about presenting gifts for the child. It's also a lot of fun for the mother-to-be and the guests. It's a good time for the new mom to talk about her plans for the future, discuss her pregnancy and get some parenting tips from the women who are close to her, so it's a valuable psychological experience as well.

Thinking of baby gift ideas isn't necessarily that easy. This is even more tricky if the parents-to-be haven't learned the gender of their baby. Frequently the best choice is a gift that's good for either a boy or a girl. An ever useful gift is a blanket, and you can seldom go wrong with soft toys. Adorable little baby dish sets or bath care products are great ideas as well. Maybe you'll decide to get some baby clothes; just keep in mind that you should avoid the newborn sizes because the baby will grow quickly and might even be too large for it at birth.

When you're choosing a gift for a baby, keep in mind that it doesn't have to be anything as expensive as a stroller or crib unless you're the grandparent. But it is important to ensure that the present you select is of good quality and safe for babies. A thoughtful gift will demonstrate to the expectant mother that you're excited and glad for her. When you're expecting a baby it's wonderful to realize that those you love the most share your happiness.

Do These 7 Things and Get the Right Toddler Travel Bed

By Jen Stoddart

Don't lose sleep trying to decide which Toddler Travel Bed is right for your child. It used to be when parents took their kids overnight to grandmas that grandma and grandpa had a second-hand crib that the toddler could sleep in. Or when traveling on vacation parents would rely on some crummy old crib setup by the hotel.

Safety and comfort is number 1 at all times when it comes to your child - and even more so when travelling with you son or daughter. Have you ever had that one night when your child cries all night - and you just know it is a result of them sleeping in an uncomfortable bed? How about getting to a hotel room and you see the crib they have set up for your son or daughter - and there is absolutely no way that you will be placing them in there to sleep - not clean - not safe - and so on. You may be ready for a toddler travel bed. There are many good quality beds to choose from - but how do you decide on the one that is the best option for your family. Read our 7 tips to help clarify your decision.

1. Lightweight - make sure that the bed is light enough to carry. When you are travelling with your toddler think about strategies to keep your load light. One way to do this is to buy a travel bed that is light. It should certainly weigh less than 6 pounds or under 3 kilograms. The lighter the better.

2. Easy to carry and load into your car. The bed you select should have its own travel case and when packed away it should be no larger than 24x8x8(in.) or 60x20x20(cm.). No matter where your travels with your child take you - on a plane on a cruise ship or to grandpa's house you have to carry all the gear and it all has to fit into tight spaces - like your car trunk or as checked baggage on a plane. A small, compact bed will help with this.

3. No hassle set up and put away process. Speed and simplicity are the keys when setting up or putting away your toddler travel bed. You arrive at your destination - your child is tired - you don't want to struggle to get the bed set up. You want a bed that one person can handle on their own for set up and for putting it away in its travel pack. The bed you get for your child should be easily set up in less than one minute or so, and it should be put away in a similar amount of time.

4. Able to reach your child with ease. It's midnight and your child is awake. You want to be able to easily put them back to sleep by patting their back or you want to pick them up. You want to easily and effortlessly get to your child. Look for a bed that has a side panel that zips down so that the panel can be lowered allowing you to reach for your son or daughter.

5. Bed with good air flow. If you choose a bed that has mesh side panels you can be assured that there will be air ventilation keeping your child cool and comfortable as they sleep.

6. Light and comfortable mattress. The mattress in a toddler travel bed can sometimes be heavier than the bed frame itself. Look for a travel bed that comes with a foam mattress - it will be both comfortable for your child and lightweight to carry.

7. Warranties. Think of the purchase of a toddler travel bed as an investment in your family's peace, happiness and safety. Make sure that the bed you purchase will be used for many years. Bed manufacturers of well built beds will provide a life time guarantee - make sure that your bed has this kind of guarantee. In addition, the retailer that you buy from is important as well. If you get the bed home and it is not what you expected - will the retailer take it back - with no arguments or difficulties?

If you travel (even to the relatives) a couple of times a year having a toddler travel bed will make it so much easier for you and your family. We think that it is an essential piece of baby gear. If you a considering a travel bed for your toddler daughter or son refer to these seven tips when making your purchasing decision.

10 Quick Steps for Getting the Best Baby Jogging Stroller for You

By Joe Peterson

If you are a mom or dad with a young child and you are an avid jogger, inline skater or power walker (or want to be) and you want to be outdoors and stay fit with your baby you can still do it. More and more families are considering a baby jogging stroller. Times have changed - baby strollers used to be for gentle walks in the park. Not anymore - baby jogging strollers are here to stay - helping moms and dads stay fit and get fit. There are lots of strollers to choose from - so it is not easy to decide. Here are 10 things that will help you to decide which one is best for you.

1. Lightweight. The lighter the better. Strollers with an aluminium frame will be noticeably lighter and much sturdier than strollers with metal tube frames. Look for a jogging stroller that weighs less than 25 pounds.

2. 16 inch wheels. A jogging stroller has three large wheels - one in front and two in back. They achieve a smooth ride for passenger and are easy to push for jogger by reducing rolling resistance. 16 inch air-filled wheels provide less rolling resistance and therefore a smoother ride and push.

3. Seating comfort. Many babies love to nap during their parents run. The stroller seat should tilt back at a 25 percent angle to make it easier for baby to sleep. In addition, the material in the seat should be a light weight fabric that breathes making it comfortable for baby especially on warmer weather days.

4. Sun canopy. Everyone is now conscious of the destructive nature of the sun`s rays, and when out exercising you want to make sure that your son or daughter is fully protected. Each jogging stroller that you consider will have a sun canopy - but some will do a better job than others in providing protection from the sun. For maximum coverage for your baby make sure that the stroller you choose has a sun canopy that rotates 360 degrees to block the sun`s rays no matter which direction your run takes you.

5. Keep your baby safe. When making your choice about any baby equipment safety is always the number 1 consideration. Jogging strollers are built for speed - so you want to make sure that your stroller will stop when you want it to. The most reliable method for stopping a stroller when it is on the move is a hand brake - much the same as those used on high-end bicycles. Your stroller should also have a foot brake for when the stroller is parked. Make sure that your child is safe and secure in their seat. Choose a stroller that employs a five point harness system. They are the safest and are easy to use.

6. Folds easily. Make sure that it can be easily folded with a one step process that one person can do (there is not always a second person available to help you) for placing into a car trunk. If it compacts to no more than 45 inches long, 25 inches wide and 18 inches tall it will fit in most cars. For even more compactness make sure it has quick release wheels that pop off and on with a push of a button.

7. Adjustable handlebar. If you are 6 foot 4 inches tall and your partner is 5 foot 4 inches tall, and you are both going to be using the stroller, the handlebar on your stroller should be easily adjustable (with a simple push of a button) making it comfortable for each of you when jogging.

8. Make sure the baby will not outgrow the stroller. The stroller is not just for use for a year. You want to make sure that you maximize its use over several years. Make sure that the seating area is large enough for your child as they grow (it should be 24 or 25 inches high in the seating area) and make sure that the stroller is rated to handle your child`s weight as they get older (look for a weight rating of up to 80 pounds).

9. Guarantees and returns. Jogging strollers are an investment in your health and your baby's happiness. You want to make your purchase with confidence. Make sure that it can be returned to the retailer with no hassles if it just isn't right for your family. And there should be a guarantee on the stroller frame of at least five years, and a guarantee of at least one year on the non-frame part of your stroller.

10. They cost as little as $280 and can be over $1,000. Don`t overpay, and don`t pay for the branding of the stroller. List the features and benefits that are most important to you. Keep in mind that the purchase will provide many years of benefits to you and your family. Then look for the least expensive stroller that meets those features and benefits. In all likelihood you can purchase one for $280 or slightly higher.

Use this list of ten things to do to list which stroller features are most important to your family. Then use your list to help you to purchase the stroller that best meets your needs.

Your Baby Care Tips

By Ferdinand Mekinsy

Once the baby shower is finished, take stock of what is already there and not. For those items still missing from your list, make the necessary arrangments to have it readily available once the baby arrives.

Fourth, post baby bash activities. After all the food, the favors and trimmings gone, it is time to clean up. The most convenient way to finish all the food left is to ask mothers to take home a portion of the food served. This not only minimizes food spoilage, it would also keep the kids occupied during the drive home, in case they start asking for food. Because there are kids who play all throughout the party and do not pay attention to the food. But once they have settled down, usually during the ride home, then they start to feel hunger pangs. Thus, you would be helping parents keep the kids behaved during the ride home.

Hunger. Yes, your attention-hungry baby is craving to let you know that his tummy is grumbling. This is the most common reason for a baby to cry, especially, during his early months. The pattern of the hunger howl could be characterized as being persistent, demanding and almost rhythmical. But that rhythm is not at any rate close to becoming musical, of course.

This baby game shower is for those who love baby trivia and the like. Play Baby Truth or Dare by writing down some baby trivia, some correct and others purposely written incorrectly. During the baby game shower, ask randomly if the baby facts are either true or false. Those who guess correctly gets a prize while those who don't will be dared to perform in front of everyone else.

Discomfort. Pain is another precursor of the baby's crying. Who won't cry when in pain, right? Babies are not Major Paynes to endure the most excruciating discomfort they could undergo. They are little, vulnerable beings that need to be attended to when injured or when in an inconvenient situation. This cry could be more persistent, louder and more demanding. Shrieking and screaming, those are words that better describe the crying pattern roused by pain.

Cloth Diapers - A Smart Choice

By Jane Bear

It is very important that babies be kept clean always since they have little or no control over their bodily functions. Proper hygiene is essential for the babies' well being. However, keeping them clean can be a very tough job. Good thing, cloth diapers can help remedy this problem.

Less than thirty years ago, disposable diapers were considered a luxury, so the only option was cotton diapers, which require a ton of laundry work. Nowadays, an increasing number of people use cotton diapers, and people that use these diapers for their babies are considered to be odd. There are several reasons that the parents of today might want to use cotton diapers instead of disposables, and, believe it or not, cloth diapers are starting to make a bit of a comeback.

For most parents, the cost of diapers is usually a great concern. A cloth diaper is lower-priced and it is also reusable, so one cloth nappy serves as well as many disposable ones.

Cloth nappies made from natural fibers are a welcome change from disposable diapers as they are soft and soothing to the skin. Disposable nappies are made of chemicals that can harm your baby's sensitive skin. Furthermore, with its synthetic texture, disposable nappies are not comfortable, and babies are more prone to develop rashes or allergies.

Cotton diapers are environmentally friendly. Environmentalists believe that by using a cloth diaper, people are just doing one more thing to "do their part" to protect and preserve the Earth for future generations. On the other hand, it is well known that plastic doesn't biodegrade very well at all, which means that our landfills are stacked with diapers that are going to be with us for centuries to come.

In recent years, cotton diapers have become more user friendly, very different from the ones used many years ago. Cotton diapers that are pre-formed with snaps or hook and loop fasteners (similar to Velcro) and all-in-one diapers with waterproof exteriors are now available, in addition to the older pre-fold and pin variety. Many cotton diapers now have a flushable, biodegradable paper lining that will catch solid waste, allowing it to be easily disposed of in the toilet.

The cloth diaper-wearing children tend to be toilet trained earlier because the cloth retains moisture, allowing the child to feel when he or she is wet or dirty, and associate the feeling with elimination.

Only a very small percentage of parents are currently using a cloth diaper but they are still out there and available. Any parent concerned with the cost or environmental impact of disposable diapers should seriously consider going with cloth diapers.

5 Reasons Why Baby Wearing Is So Popular

By Jen Stoddart

It's all the rage. Famous and not-so-famous moms and dads all over the world are wearing their baby! Are you next?

Baby slings and baby carriers are taking families by storm - they are the newest 'must have' baby gear. And leading the way are famous people like Brad and Angelina - they both wear baby carriers.

Baby has become a new (and beautiful) fashion accessory. There are many types and styles to choose from, including slings, wraps and back frame carriers. And they are created as much for style as they are for comfort and convenience.

Are you next to join the trend? Their popularity is not going to diminish anytime soon - and here is our list of 5 things that will keep them high in demand...

1. Flexibility. Today's moms and dads are multi-taskers - they have to be to get everything done that they want to get done. It is hard to accomplish everything if you are holding your baby much of the day the old traditional way (that is, without a carrier). A carrier provides the flexibility to free your hands so that you can look after baby and at the same time accomplish other tasks.

2. Comfortable for baby and parent. People all over the world are amazed how comfortable today's modern baby carriers are for both the parent and the baby - that's because the carriers are built so that the weight is not on the arms of the person carrying the baby - but instead is spread across the shoulders and back of the person. This feature makes the carrier a comfort to wear.

3. Carrier can be used for newborn babies (some types of carriers) and they can also be used to carry older children (especially useful on a full day outing to a museum or to the zoo). This means that the carrier can have a long-life for families.

4. Soothing to baby. It's a well known fact that babies love to be held - holding them increases their contentment - and the more content the less they tend to cry. Carriers (especially sling and wrap styles) are built for holding baby close to you. It feels good for baby and it also feels good for you!

5. Easy to breastfeed. With a baby carrier breastfeeding a baby can be done anywhere. Wrap carriers, in particular have a large amount of material in the 'pouch' where you hold the baby. This provides mom and baby with privacy during feeding and it also means that the baby without being taken out of the carrier can be moved from one side to the other.

More and more celebrities are having children, and in our celebrity-centric world people watch what they do. And they are using baby slings to wear their baby. So when celebrities are doing it - it logically follows that the general public will follow suit.

And it's not just mom anymore. More and more celebrity dads and the not-so-famous dads are getting in on the convenience and joy of carrying their child in a carrier.

Grandparents - Helpful Holiday Shopping Tips for the New Baby

By Edie Mindell

This is your first Christmas as the proud Grandparent. There is no greater joy than that of greeting a new baby, except perhaps that joy of greeting a new grandbaby. Grandparenthood is a special club that encourages reckless spoiling of those beloved creatures. There was no true maxim than that of: many a child is spoiled because you can't spank Grandma.

If this year is your first year celebrating Christmas as a grandparent, congratulations! Not since the magical days spent with your own children will the Holidays seem so full. There are however a few pitfalls that new grandparents are susceptible to. For a joyous celebration that won't create ill will here are a few tips to follow.

Holiday Gift Giving

This is the season of giving, and it is so much fun to give gifts to a toddler or baby. Baby clothes are so much fun to pick out and wrap. Toys are much more exciting to purchase and watch being unwrapped than the offerings for adults. It is easy to go overboard.

Remember, gifts are often expected at Christmas time, and they are very appreciated but an over abundance of gifts rivaling the collection of Ritchie Rich is not likely to engender the appreciation of the new parents. Try to set a limit for yourself. Your grandbaby does not need every single toy or pair of shoes you lay eyes on.

If you are not sure what the limit should be have an honest conversation with your grandbaby's parents. When everyone is on the same page from the beginning there is much less chance of hurting feelings or over stepping some unknown boundary.

Special Gifts

When it comes to specific gifts some are just off limits to grandparents. This means that perhaps your daughter-in-law feels it a parental right to purchase her baby girl that all important first doll. Perhaps it is the unknown wish of your child to present his or her own baby with a keepsake quilt.

The problem with these special gifts is not so much the desire to be the one to give it to the baby, but the symbolism behind it. The flip side of the special gift scenario is that of contraband gifts. Perhaps guns or overly frivolous Barbies have been placed on the no-no list by the baby's parent. As the grandparent you may have no idea what these special or contraband gifts might be.

Again it is time to discuss gift options with your grandbaby's parents. No grandparent wants to become the stereotypical 'in-law'. Keeping communication lines open will ensure that Christmas is a time of fun giving and spoiling that leaves everyone with feelings of love and respect.

It makes sense to look to others who know the lay of the land of being a good parent and to learn from professionals about what they recommend for some of these decisions. If you can get good advice from qualified professionals and other moms and dads about the decisions they made and which ones they were happy with and which they regretted, that takes a lot of the pressure off of figuring it all out yourself.

In 1996, Westbury, New York, Baby R Us opened its first store. It has been immediately followed with opening six more branches on different locations at the end of the year. After tremendous expansion and joining the Baby Superstore chain, Baby R Us store count has reach 218 at the beginning of 2005. What a mammoth feat for a baby store, right?

In his article on how to find the perfect baby bedding, it must be neither too hard nor too soft. In the past, sudden infant death syndrome or SIDS was attributed to very soft baby bedding. This happened when the baby's mattress is too soft that his nose and mouth gets covered and the air he exhales is the air he breathes. This is dangerous for him since he would breath carbon dioxide rather than oxygen and the effects could lead to drowsiness, coma or even death.

Baby Backpack Carriers

By Carol J Pearson

If you have decided to get a baby carrier you need to choose one suitable for your purpose. There are three main types of Baby Carrier to choose from Front Carriers (baby in front of you), Back Carriers (baby on your back) and Slings (baby cradled in front). Some are very inexpensive and others carry a designer label.

Before you buy a baby carrier try one on first. Without trying one on, you can't actually get a feel for what is going to work best for you, so ask other moms what they have used, and what has worked for them. Once you get a great review, ask if you can try it with your baby.

The front and back carriers put babies in an vertical position, so may not be appropriate for newborns, but they are great when you are going through the grocery store and your toddler gets the grab-its. It keeps your baby safe and happy since they can't run off because you are carrying them, and your hands are free. If you go with a front carrier, look for one that you can convert to a backpack when your child gets older, as most youngsters love the backpack until the age 4 or 5. It also makes it fun and safe for acquainting your child to hiking, or any other activity where a pushchair may not endure the terrain.

Baby slings are adept, and can be used for any age child. Some convert for a sitting position to help you have your arms free if that is your child's favourite method of being carried. Slings are my personal favourite, but you do have to tweak them a little to get them adjusted and to be comfortable. The only downside I can think of with a sling is that one hand needs to be available if an active baby tries to make an escape.

Why are slings and carriers so popular? In addition to the practical reasons of having your hands free, being next to your baby increases bonding. It also soothes baby, and the rhythm of moving with you is comforting to your child. Being at eye level with you (such as when they are in a backpack) gives the child or toddler a chance to see things from a another perspective.

When you've decided on your baby carrier, make sure you give yourself a little time to adjust. Sometimes you are using muscles you hadn't used before; but once you get used to having your baby next to you, safe and happy, you wont want them anywhere else. Your carrier may well become your most important piece of baby equipment.

Consider Baby Memory Books for Holiday and Cool Baby Shower Gifts

By Edie Mindell

A mother is not the only one who has memories of baby and toddlerhood. Grandparents also play a very important part in the making and keeping of a child's memories.

The advent of the holiday season marks the passing of another year. Each of us becomes a bit more nostalgic than usual at this time so rich in tradition and with the reminders of ending and beginnings so close on every hand. As minds wander over the previous year and holidays past we can see those little ones that are dear to our hearts and mark their growth with each Christmas.

It is often difficult to believe that the little one that runs about the house with pattering feet and a barely decipherable chatter was little more than a roly-poly smiling bundle at this same time last year.

Good intentions

Each baby is born to mothers who have the best of intentions to record and photograph each moment of this child's life. Many mothers rise to this challenge amid hectic schedules and life's demands. Yet few remain as committed to the scrapbook of the last child as they were with the first. Some mothers just don't have time to even begin and those cute baby memory books remain untouched as the years pass.

Filling a need

Moms and Dads are not the only persons in a child's life that have memories to record and share. Aunties and Grandmas also love and care for these babies from birth to the toddler years and right on up. This year why not give a gift that records and shares these precious memories with your precious baby?

Photos that are locked on computer hard drives or remain hidden on memory chips in cameras aren't very accessible. Toddlers love to see pictures of themselves and hear stories featuring them as they were when they were a baby. A memory book dedicated to them will be a big hit.

The toddler is not the only one who will appreciate the memory book. Moms from the dedicated scrap booking enthusiast to the mom who never even started will appreciate photos of her child that are already arranged, journaled and require nothing of her time and energy other than pure enjoyment.

Unique perspective

Grandmas and Aunties have a unique perspective that they can share. As a grandparent or sibling you can share memories of the baby as well as the parent you knew as a child. Pointing out similarities in looks, behavior and attitudes is often fun for both the toddler and their parent to discover. You can also laugh more readily at the natural naughtiness of childhood. As a loved one not in the parental role it is a funny occurrence - not a tragic mess - when the toothpaste is emptied from the tube, or the butter is eaten in huge bites right from the cube.

Getting started

To start your memory book Christmas gift give yourself time to complete it. The value of this gift is in its creation and not the monetary investment, so make sure you give it the time it deserves. The internet will be your best friend. You can get the photos you need by sending them directly from your PC to the photo shop via email. This saves time and gas. If you have the capability you can even print the photos yourself at home.

Memory books come in all shapes and sizes. You can get a one-time book that you can fill, or you can get a book that allows for the addition of pages as the years roll on. Browse online to find the book that is right for you, and then get to work. This is one gift that will be pleasing to giver and recipient alike.
