Finding ChildCare

By Anne Ahira

Your children are your pride and joy. There is nothing that you would not do for them. Their safety and well-being are your primary concerns so when you are looking into childcare options you will want to take great care to find the option that fits your family best.

One sort of childcare that is promptly accessible is childcare centers. Childcare centers are usually features that provide control for groups of kids. In several state it is necessary that a childcare center be completely qualified .

While licenses are crucial they do not warrant the child care excellence . Any parent will want to entirely visit the facility and encounter with the personnel previously making the choice to put your kid into the care of a specific childcare center.

Another great childcare option is in-home caregivers. An in-home caregiver is an individual that may live in or out of the child's home. Typically, these individuals are not regulated by the state so it falls to parents to interview the childcare professional. There is a bit of comfort and flexibility in knowing that your child will be taken care of in your own home.

Perhaps the most common type of childcare is the kind that is provided by your friends, neighbors, and family. Though sometimes asking for them to care for your children can be difficult, the great thing about this type of child care is that you can be sure that your children are being cared for by people that truly love and care for them.

Nursery Decoration Hints and Tips

By Alice Ault

Decorating your nursery may seem confusing and stressful. After all, there are many decisions to make and lots of work to get done before your new little one arrives on the scene. However, the process of nursery decoration doesn't have to be a difficult one. Here are some tips to help you end up with an attractive nursery that's just perfect for your child.

Often, no matter what color scheme you choose, you'll want to keep the walls simple. This helps keep the room from feeling closed in, and you'll save cash in the long run.Toddlers usually want to have their rooms decorated according to their personal choices. If the walls aren't the best shape, you can use wall decals or wall stickers, which are removable, to add interest and cover up damage. These can easily and inexpensively be replaced later with ones your child prefers. Alternatively, some parents choose to use childrens wallpaper on just one wall, for an interesting feature wall.

Choose curtains that are lined with blackout fabric to create a dark room for snoozing, and ensure that you choose color and pattern carefully. If you don't know the sex of your baby yet, keep to a fairly neutral color scheme. Even parents who do know whether they're having a boy or a girl often choose less gendered decorations, so they can use their nursery materials again for the next child.Pink is cute - unless you have a son unexpectedly, or your little girl has a brother. Avoid using very dark or bold colors - light shades are best for a child's room, particularly if it's small.

Soft furnishings are easier to change out than wallpaper or paint, and make it easy to add a theme that you won't be stuck with.A simple change of blanket or curtains can create a whole new look if you keep to neutral colors on the walls and floor.Common themes that are unisex include jungles, toys, ocean scenes and wild animals. For girls, princesses and fairies are often popular, while boys seem to like sports and cars. However, each child is different, and once yours has his or her own preferences, it's hard to tell what will be best. That's why an easily changeable nursery is usually the best idea.

It's relatively simple to set up your nursery and end up with one that looks good. All you need to do is plan with care and pay attention to your budget. Some creativity in decorating your nursery will allow you to have reusable items, in case you're planning to have another baby, and it'll help you save money, too.

Take a look at your home, and exactly what you need from a nursery, before you get started. Then price compare and forward plan. You'll end up with a nicely put together, attractively furnished nursery that'll be perfect for your new baby.

The History of Baby Naming Ceremonies Around the World

By Edie Mindell

The purpose of a baby shower is to celebrate the arrival of a new baby, and to welcome the little one into the world. Today, expectant mothers often decide to know the gender of the baby before they give birth, and it is known ahead of the baby shower. However, in some cases, parents choose to wait until the due date to know the sex of the baby and be surprised the day that the infant arrives.

In American society, when the gender of the baby is known, parents often begin brainstorming ideas and deciding on some names that they believe will be perfect for the baby. In many cases, parents already know what they want to name the baby even before the child is born. This is not the case, however, for various different cultures.

There are a variety of different cultures that view the baby-naming process from a completely different perspective. Each cultural group generally has some sort of a baby-naming ceremony or traditional process. From the Jewish to the Japanese, each culture views the act of giving a name to a baby from a very interesting and distinct angle.

In Japan, the baby naming ceremony is typically held seven days after the babys birth. The name is written in Kanji, which are Chinese characters that are usually used in the modern Japanese Iogographic writing system. On this seventh day, the Japanese give their children a first name and a last name, but no middle name, which is a common custom in American society. Girls are usually given names that are associated with purity and morality, and boys are often associated with their position in the family.

Greek families also often name their babies on the seventh day after their birth, and sometimes on the tenth day. Traditionally, first-born males are named after their paternal grandfather, and first-born females are named after their paternal grandmother. The Greek Orthodox Church also strongly influences the baby-naming process, and many infants are given the names of saints. Because of this saint name acquisition, children acquire their saints name day. Therefore, many Greek Orthodox people celebrate their lives on two occasions: their actual birth date and their saints name day.

For many Italian and Hispanic cultures, baby names are also often influenced by religion. In these areas, the Roman Catholic religion is the most prevalent; therefore, biblical names like Maria (in Hispanic culture), and Paulo (in Italian culture) are common.

In Jewish culture, baby girls have what is called the Zeved Habat ceremony, while baby boys have the Berit Milah ceremony. The Zevet Habat is a small ceremony held at a home or in a synagogue. During the ceremony, which is led by a Rabbi, the mother recites a word, the name-giving prayer is said, and she then gives thanks to everyone.

There are countless different ways of naming a baby, and there is no right or wrong method to giving your child the perfect name. It is interesting to see, however, the traditions and customs of baby naming across the globe.

Newborn Baby Gifts and Baby Shower Games Equal a Fun Time

By Edie Mindell

Although traditional baby shower games never fail and are always a success, new baby shower games are emerging and spreading across the United States. These cool, unconventional activities are different than the classics but with all the fun and more. If you are aiming for a hip, edgier baby shower with a twist from the classic, all-American baby shower, include a few of these new, trendy games that are sure to be a hit at your shower.

The "Dirty Diaper" game is one of the most clever and unusual, yet surprisingly sweet games out there. For this game, fold white cloth napkins or square pieces of white fabric into small diapers. Inside one of these mini diapers, place an unwrapped Hersheys kiss or any other chocolate bonbon. Fasten all the diapers with a baby diaper safety pin.

When guests arrive to the baby shower, hand one mini baby diaper to each person. Tell the guests to keep them closed and to not open them until instructed to do so. Then, when the time comes for all your games and activities, tell your guests that one of them has a dirty diaper. Tell them to open the diapers all at once, and whoever has the "dirty diaper," or the chocolate bonbon inside of their diaper, wins a prize.

Another game with a meaning is the "umbilical cord." For this game, you will need two spools of string or yarn, and two spoons. Choose volunteers and set up two or more teams of about eight to ten people. Attach each spoon to the tip of each string or yarn. The point of the game is to pass the "umbilical cord" through all the members of each team, by passing the string in through the neck seam and out through the opening of the skirt of each team player. This is very humorous, as you can imagine. The first team that passes the cord through all of the members wins.

A game that is becoming increasingly popular among baby showers is "Guess Whos Baby Picture?" For this game, make sure to tell guests on the invitations, and remind them before the shower, to bring in a baby picture of themselves when they were infants. Number each picture and put them up on a big bulletin board. During the games and activities session of your baby shower, give each guest a paper and pens or pencils. Have each paper numbered with the amount of pictures posted on the bulletin board.

When the game begins, tell the guests to fill in the numbers on the paper with the names of the people who they believe correspond to the baby picture. For example, if I think that baby picture #1 corresponds to Katie, I would write "Katie" after the number one on my paper. The guest that has highest number of right answers wins the challenge. If there is more than one guest with the same highest number of right answers, issue a tiebreaker.

Remember, all of these new games started as an idea. Try to come up with a few clever, never before used games. Who knows, they could potentially become a hit by the end of the year!

Having a Baby Ear Thermometer in your home is a must

By Barbara Ellar

One should never use a glass the thermometer on a baby or small child, the reason being that is because glass thermometer contains mercury and if the child was to break the thermometer in their mouth by biting down, they could then take some of the mercury in or even cut themselves on their very this glass.

An extremely popular and relatively cheap thermometer is what is known as a stick thermometer. A stick thermometer has a digital screen along with a long tail which is placed under a child's armpit for taking a reading. About five years ago a popular thermometer was a strip thermometer, this strip thermometer resembles a photographic negative and this is placed over the child's for head and then a number will appear indicating the child's temperature.

Infra-red thermometers used to only be seen in doctors' rooms but These Days due to the fact that they are being mass produced by some of the largest electronics companies in the world, the price of a unit has come down significantly and therefore has become more accessible for the average family to own one.

When using an infra-red baby ear thermometer on a child you can take the temperature in just a few seconds in most cases the child will only turn their head away after the temperature has been recorded.

Apart from being very accurate infra-red thermometers are the best for babies because of the fact that they take the temperature so quickly in fact so quickly that the baby won't even notice their temperature of being taken, and an accurate measurement is taken in under 2 seconds.

A mother and father have an instinct when it comes to their children's well being. I know when I just pick up my child I will know instantly whether or not their temperature is higher than usual. Children can have temperatures and high fevers many times a year and it is critical to be able to take an accurate measurement using a baby ear thermometer.

When monitoring the child's temperature I usually take a reading every 30 minutes or depending on my level of paranoia it could be every 15 minutes. Sometimes I can become a so concerned that I lose track of what they temperature it was when I last took it and I have no idea whether or not it is improving. Many modern baby ear thermometers have a history which is really useful in these cases.

If you use a glass thermometer always make sure that it is sterilised in either boiling water or a sterilising agent. If you use an infra-red baby ear thermometer, ensure that you replace the cap with a new one after each time you use it.

The Perfect Nursery Planner

By Alice Ault

Often, the baby's nursery is one of the smallest rooms in the home. Lots of nurseries are adapted from home offices, sewing rooms, and even walk in closets! There's nothing wrong with this, but it means you're working with a small, and frequently oddly shaped space.

That means that the colors you opt for and the furniture placed in it are very important. Bad ones could result in a cramped, overwhelming space. The right ones will help the nursery feel cozy and welcoming. However, the process of choosing nursery furniture doesn't have to be a difficult one. Here are a few hints to make sure you end up selecting charming but practical nursery furniture that's just right for your child.

You'll need to start out with a list of your basic needs for the room. Usually cots or cribs are required, as well as storage and changing space. You'll need to measure the size of the room and the furniture you want to place. Draw up a plan, taking into account the locations of built in wardrobes, radiators, windows, and the door's swing area. These obstacles can be real real headaches in your nursery if you forget about them.Too many parents have been surprised by an obstacle in a place they wanted to put storage or other furniture.

This will allow you to work out where your items will fit. If you haven't bought your furniture yet, use average sizes from stockists to decide your placement. You might even think about creating pieces of newspaper in the dimensions of your furniture and putting them on the floor in the correct locations. That will allow you to judge how much space is available and let you try moving around in it to see if things feel OK.You won't discover that your furniture is too big or cramped together after you buy.

Remember not to get too much when you're buying items for your new little one. It's easy to get carried away.Your baby will be using some of these items for only a short time, so it's a good idea to keep to your budget and your real needs. Will you choose cots or cot beds? Is there a toddler bed available for when a cot is no longer needed? What about the changing area?

Ensure you have enough storage space, and that it's a comfortable height for changing your baby - you shouldn't lean over or stand in an awkward position. You can even buy cot top changers - these fit over the top of a cot - to save space until your baby is big enough to roll over.

Hot Trends in Baby Names in 2009

By Edie Mindell

This year, the hottest trends for baby naming are quite a bit unusual. From biblical names with a twist to foreign names, 2009 sets a whole new pattern for naming babies. Name meanings and history are important to consider when naming a baby, since that name will be something that will be with them for the rest of their lives. Although name definitions are the first things one usually looks at when choosing the perfect name for a baby, following name trends has become very common in todays society. Year 2008 keeps a little bit of the traditional element in popular baby names, but also integrates modern style, a retro factor, and an unusual touch.

As it has been established for the past few years, biblical traditional names are some of the most popular. Jacob, Joshua, Abigail, Daniel, and Gabriel are some names that have been prevalent in recent times. A few uncommon additions to these common biblical names are those such as Caleb, Ethan, Zachary, and Elijah. The name "Elijah" is actually one of the most popular names this year. Many people hold true to biblical names because they are classic, and they usually have a beautiful, deep meaning that professes great things for your babys life.

An interesting trend this year is for Western parents to give their children foreign names. Spanish, Asian, Italian, Irish, and Arab names have become quite popular amongst North Americans and the English. Carlos, a Spanish name meaning "free man," Connor, an Irish name that stands for "much wanted," and Lian, a Chinese name whose meaning is a "lotus flower," are some of the most widespread foreign names that have gone global.

Another cool and trendy practice in 2008 is giving your name a classic, traditional name with a twist in the spelling. For instance, instead of naming your baby girl "Natalie," come up with a different and creative way to spell the name, such as "Natelly." Alterations to common names should be well planned and thought out. Place an emphasis on the part of the name, or a sound in the name that you like the most. This is a fabulous way to make your baby stand out from the rest. Uniquely spelled names are ranked at the top this year.

A continuing pattern that began last year and has continued throughout this year is to give your baby the name of a place. Australia, Athena, London, Ireland, and Paris are common place names that have become popular baby names this year. Some believe that this trend is a result of the popularity of Paris Hilton, a famous heiress and style icon. Naming babies after a location on the map is probably the top trend for 2009.

Lastly, giving children weird and unusual names is a common trend today among celebrities. From "Apple" to "Shiloh," these names are sure to stand out from the crowd. When choosing the right name for your little one, remember consider all aspects of the name, from sound and spelling to meaning and significance.

Barbie Dolls - The Fashion Doll

By Brooke Darlington

Barbie is a fashion doll created by Mattel. She was launched March 1959 and from then on has been one of the famous dolls. It is believed that credit for Barbie's creation and success should be given to American businesswoman Ruth Handler who was inspired by German doll called Bild Lilli and eventually was led to the idea of developing a similar doll but should be called Barbie.

For almost fifty years, Barbie has been a part of every girls' wish list for Christmas or other similar occasions. She has been one of the kids' most favorite toys and has been one of the best seller toys online, particularly in eBay and Amazon.

However, although Barbie has definitely been a part of every girls' life, she continued to be the subject of many lawsuits and controversies, oftentimes involving parody of the doll and her lifestyle. Recently, Barbie has faced stiff competition with Bratz range of dolls which are dolls that have also been so popular to girls.

But despite the lawsuits, controversies, and competition, Barbie remained distinct and really playable. Right now, Barbie already have forty pets including horses, a panda, cats and dogs, a zebra, and a lion cub. She owns a wide range of vehicles, including trailers, jeeps, and the trendy pink Corvette convertibles. Not to mention that she also holds a pilot's license and operates commercial airliners aside from being a flight attendant.

Barbie has also a lot of friends which makes playing with her more fun. Friends of Barbie actually include African American Christie and her boyfriend Steven, Hispanic Teresa, and Midge. Barbie has also some siblings and cousins, Todd (twin brother of Tutti and Stacie), Tutti (twin sister of Todd), Stacie (Twin sister of Todd), Skipper, Kelly, Krissy, Francie, and Jazzie. Playing Barbie together with her siblings and cousins is actually a whole lot of fun.

Barbie also has a love life. In fact, she has an on-off romantic relationship with Ken Carson or simply Ken. Ken actually was released in 1961 and like Barbie has also been so popular. Both Barbie and Ken have fashionable lines of clothing as well accessories which kids really like.

The Accidental Expectant Father

By Damian Papworth

The night we found out we were pregnant with our first was one of those few moments in my life that I will never forget. Before that moment, I'd never have imagined that one little test would leave such an impression on my life, but it did. My spouse and I were pregnant, we had embarked on a new adventure of joint purpose, of family.

We don't live close to family, they are all at least a short flight away. This has is advantages and disadvatages. One of the definite pros though is we have a constant stream of visitors coming and living with us for a week or so. Its really nice.

It was early 2008 that we started to suspect this unplanned pregnancy. We actually had my parents staying with us at the time. So we decided to wait till they left before getting the test, to confirm what was going on.

Doing the test was an experience in itself. My wife took it into the bathroom, followed the instructions and lost all confidence, fleeing the room. She insisted I go and check the results, she no longer had the courage.

So I wandered into the bathroom to discover the telltale additional lines, our first baby was on the way. I headed back into the living room with a huge grin on my face and was met by a barrage of demands. Demands that I tell her immediately and to stop holding out on her. So I sat down beside her and softly said "sweetheart, we are going to have a baby".

At this moment she point blank accused me of lying, telling me she didn't believe a word I said and ran into the bathroom to see for herself. It was pretty funny! This was a great introduction to our first pregnancy as those initial magical moments can only be described by the word "rollercoaster". Which is exactly what the next 8 months or so turned out to be.

The rest of this evening was nothing short of blissful. The news, though unexpected and unplanned, brought us together as a couple in a way I never would have thought possible. The intimacy of this special news was something only we shared. The way we shared this revelation stregthened our relationship massively. All of a suden we were a partnership that nothing could cast assunder.

Pregnancy, particularly your first, is packed with precious moments like this. These moments can not only be precious though, but massively positive for your relationship with your partner. They have the power to bring you closer together, to bind you in joint purpose. Unfortunately though, I found as the expectant father, sometimes you need to fight to protect those moments for yourself and your partner. There are so many people out there who lose sight of family boundaries during a pregnancy and try to interfere, to the extent that they will marginalise you as far as they can out of the process.

The perfect example of this type of incident occured when we were visiting my wife's sister. The two women have a mutual friend, she's been a friend of theirs for years. While we were there, this friend rang the sister and completely independent of us, told her we want her to be present in the delivery room when our baby arrives. This was the last thing we wanted, we saw the delivery as a moment we would share alone. Yet this well meaning woman decided it was appropriate to organise for us what she thought was best, without even discussing it with us.

Second guessing the advice we received from our doctors was another big issue. When these women had their babies, they did it differently. So the information our doctors were giving us must have been incorrect, these well meaning women knew "much better".

This is part of the reason why, as mentioned above, expecting your firstborn can be a bit of a rollercoaster. The highs you experience really are tremendous, all those first time experiences that are happening because you and your partner are bringing a new life into the world.

But they often are tempered by the "well meaning woman", who seems to want to compete with you for ownership of these moments. This for me was especially hard to fathom given she is was one of the people we wanted to share with and talk to about it all. (well, at least until she pushed once too often)

In talking to many other new fathers in my circle of friends, it seems as men, this is an issues we all have to face. The "well meaning woman" pops up everywhere, typically is the wife's best friend, or mother, sometimes it can be your own mother. Its always someone who has already had children though, and someone who "knows better".

Is there a well meaning woman causing issues in you family at the moment? The one thing I found when it happened to me was it was time for me to grow up. For the first time, I had to stand tall and protect my family. When these types of situation arise, there are two things you need to protect your family from.

Firstly, make sure these people do not interfere with your relationship with your doctor. Find a way to make them understand all medical opinions are off limits to them.

Secondly we found that we were second guessing the decisions we had mad as a couple because of all the naysayers telling us they'd do it differently. We gradually learned that that probably the most important things a couple can bring to their pregnancy and the birth of their children, are their own instincts. Other mothers' instincts and ideas were great for their pregnancies and births, but every single one is unique. And there are only two people who know what is best for your unique pregnancy and that is you and your partner. No-one else's opinion is appropriate. You need to protect your family from other people's opinions underminding the trust you have in your own instincts and those of your spouse.

Remember, as an expectant father, people will continually try and make you feel out of the loop. They will continually leave you second guessing yourself. Trust your instincts, insulate your family from the inappropriate interferances of others and make the decisions which are right for your circumstances.

Desserts Are a Sure-fire Way to Up the Baby Shower Fun Factor

By Edie Mindell

Baby showers are not complete without sweets! Desserts, fruit, and pastries add sweetness and charm to special events. Sweets are an important part of a baby shower, so do not forget to include them in your menu. If you have reservations in a restaurant, the restaurant will probably offer a dessert menu from which you can choose your selection of sweets and post-meal indulgences.

If you are hosting the baby shower at a banquet hall or at someones home, the dessert menu is completely up to you to decide on. You can make desserts fun, sweet, and baby themed to match your event. If there is a specific theme that you are focusing on, like "Pink Tea," design your dessert menu around your theme. Popular sweets for baby showers are pastries, clairs, truffles, fruits, chocolates, and the ever-classic cake.

Pastries and clairs can be bought or baked. Visit your local bakery to find out about any special deals and offers that they can offer for a large quantity of pastries purchased. You can also find some good recipes online or in a cookbook, and bake the pastries yourself. A great alternative to this is to buy frozen pastries at your local grocery store, or better yet, at a wholesale grocery store. These are affordable and scrumptiously delicious. B.J.s and Costco supermarkets have amazing clairs that nobody will ever know were bought frozen.

Trufas are a Latin American version of truffles. Truffles are not necessarily made out of chocolate in Hispanic countries, but can be made with coconut, vanilla, and other flavors. Two popular flavors in Latin America are coconut and cocoa-flavored truffles. An easy recipe for truffles calls for one can of sweetened condensed milk, a box of crushed vanilla wafer cookies, and a half of a teaspoon of vanilla extract. Cocoa, sweetened shredded coconut, and sprinkles are good add-ons.

Crush the cookies until you end up purely with cookie crumbs. Slowly add the sweetened condensed milk until you reach the desire consistency of tough clay. Add the vanilla flavoring along with the chosen flavor (cocoa, coconut, etc.). Use you own taste to decide how much cocoa or coconut to use. Roll into small, round truffles. As a finishing touch, roll the coconut truffles around in shredded coconut, and roll the cocoa truffles in cocoa. Sprinkles are optional.

Fruits and dip is a healthy and fresh option for a sweet treat. Serve apple slices, strawberries, pineapple, grapes, and melon alongside fruit dip, and you have got a fabulous and nutritious treat! Popular choices for fruit dip are caramel, chocolate, and yogurt dip.

Chocolate is a must-have for any baby shower. Small chocolates can be bought in bulk and served on tiny cupcake cups, for an elegant touch. You can also buy pastel-colored white chocolate (sold in bags in most craft stores), melt it, and pour the melted chocolate into small baby-themed molds (also can be found at a craft store). Refrigerate, and voila: delicate and adorable little chocolates!

Whichever sweets you decide to include in your menu, and whether or not you decide to make or buy them, do not forget about the cake! Whether you order it and have it made especially for your shower, or make it yourself, make sure that you are 100% satisfied with its outcome and that it ties into your baby shower theme.

Nanny Search: Interview Points to Consider

By Rashel Dan

Going on a nanny search takes time. What would help though is knowing what to consider during interviews. Often, this goes beyond asking the right questions. How should you interview a potential nanny?

Important Interview Questions

There are no standard interview questions to ask. Interview questions differ per parent or family. A potential nanny may be asked numerous or very little questions. The kinds and number of questions that you ask will depend on you. Do remember though that there are just some questions that you shouldnt miss to ask. These questions are uniformly asked by most, if not all families. These include questions about experience, relevant training, references and child caring practices. These basic questions will initially determine if your interviewee has suitable qualifications.

Supplementary Questions

As much as possible, when interviewing a potential nanny, you should ask more than just the necessary questions. Your interview should also consist of supplementary questions that are related to nanny work and your applicant. You can ask an applicant how she has solved past problems with kids, what she has learned in previous nanny work and why she wants to become a nanny.

You need to learn more about the personal traits of your nanny and these questions will reveal a lot about it. Here answers will give you an idea if you are comfortable with her values and beliefs. Be careful though. If you ask too many meticulous questions, you might just drive the good nannies away.

Interview Set-Up

You also have to make sure that the interview environment is appropriate. Have your interviewee sit in a comfortable area in your living room. Give her a drink or some refreshments. This will help break the ice and put your interviewee at ease. This is important. A relaxed and comfortable applicant would be more likely to be conversational and open. You might be able to get hints of previous experiences that you might want to know about.

Fee Discussion

One crucial point that deserves separate mention is the fee. This is something that some families tend to put little emphasis on. It is however a very important part of every interview session. After all, people are motivated to work because of compensation. Be sure to ask a potential nanny how much she would be willing to work for. If you do not agree with her rate, let her know how much you can afford. If she agrees to it, make sure she understands that the amount is all she can expect. Arriving at an understanding about fees will help ensure that you have a nanny who will complain and work grudgingly.

Trial Period

Ask about the possibility of a trial period with compensation. This would be a good way to see if your nanny and your kids get along well. Mentioning this during the interview is important because it will help your nanny understand that anything can happen after the trial period. She may or may not get the job depending on how things go.

Your nanny search can yield fruitful results if you know where and how to start your search. You just need to organize the right interview session to find good potential nannies.

Essential Questions to Help You Find a Nanny

By Rashel Dan

You have more to consider than just a persons capabilities to watch over kids. You also need to be sure that the person you hire will not put your kids in any form of danger. One way to get a good nanny is to ask the right questions when you interview applicants.

Can you tell me a little bit about your experience working with kids?

This is one of the most important question to ask a potential nanny. Some people without experience may still end up good nannies. Some families though really do need nannies with prior work experience. This is particularly true if you have kids that are quite a handful. Aside from possible baby sitting experience, you could also consider individuals who may have worked with kids in another setting such as in classrooms, nurseries or day care.

Do you have additional training relevant to this job you are applying for?

A potential nanny does not have to be enrolled in a nanny school. There are however some skills that potential nannies should have to ensure the safety of your kids. This would include training in first aid, emergency response and CPR. In case there are emergencies or accidents, you would want a nanny who can give the right initial response.

Why do you want to become a nanny?

Motivation or the reason behind being a nanny is important. You would want to find a nanny who is naturally inclined to the job. Asking this question will reveal a lot about an applicants motivation and character. Although it is understood that applicants are in it for the extra cash, you would most likely be more comfortable with persons who also naturally love to be with kids. This is after all, the only acceptable reason why good applicant would want to work as nannies and not as waitresses or fast food service crew.

What do you believe is the proper way of disciplining kids?

Find out what her methods are in handling kids. It is important to find out if a nanny shares the same beliefs as you regarding discipline. You would want your nanny's methods to be consistent with yours. Moreover, you would also want to know if your nanny has tendencies to become to severe or too physical when it comes to discipline.

How did you handle difficulties in your former job?

Many kids are not very easy to handle. It is not uncommon for nannies to encounter problems with handling kids. It would be a good idea to ask applicants about such difficult experiences and how they dealt with it. This will give you a clue if a potential nanny has the creativity, patience and determination to manage kids.

What are you presently doing?

Being currently employed means having other responsibilities. It is crucial to know if your applicant some form of employment at present. Some individuals do keep more than one job. You wouldnt need to worry if an applicant has a part time job on the hours that wouldnt conflict with the time that you need her. It would be a problem though if your nanny has side jobs that she might consider performing while watching over your kids.

These may sound like simple questions but they reveal a lot in your task to find a nanny. There are many other questions you might want to consider. What is important is to make sure that you do perform a comprehensive applicant interview.

Becoming An Effective Parent

By Leslie T. Savinsky

Fathers and mothers don't really find out how to care for children from books and lectures. They learn the basics during their own childhoods. If a child is raised in an easygoing way, he is likely to be the same kind of parent. The can be said for someone raised by strict parents. We all end up at least somewhat like our parents, especially in the way we deal with our children.

Think back to your own childhood. There are probably things about how they behaved towards you as parents which youd like to pass along to your own children and other things youd definitely like to avoid. Becoming a parent is a chance to look at your past and how your childhood molded into who you are today, as well as how to become the kind of parent youd like to be for your children.

You'll find that you will learn about how to be a parent gradually, through the experience of caring for your children. It's finding out that you can feed, change, bathe, and burp successfully that will give you confidence and feelings of familiarity and love. These become the foundations of a solid, trusting relationship with your child. But don't expect to feel this way right off the bat.

We all have an enormous amount of influence over our children; but we also have much to learn from our children about the process of parenting. Many people find that parenthood transforms them and look back on it as one of the most important personal growth experiences of their lives.

Think for a minute about people immigrating to the US and starting families here. This describes almost every American family, at least at some point in their history " our nation was built up over time by wave after wave of new arrivals from all over the world. Millions have come here and begun the intimidating process of raising a child in a new country and an unfamiliar culture. You can imagine the confusion which they must feel.

Its not really any easier to start a family even if you were born here. You moved away from your parents home and unless you are taking care of aging parents, you do not have their guidance to draw upon. In our own way, all of us immigrate to the nation of parenthood as we begin a family.

Just like an immigrant starting a family in a new and unfamiliar country, we as parents face the challenge of deciding what cultural values to pass on to our children. We need to be able to hold on to our core values while being able to adapt to and participate fully in the culture at large. Families which cut all ties to their core cultural values are likely to find themselves adrift and without any meaningful core values to pass on to their children. On the other hand, families which adhere to closely to their cultural ties can find that these differences effectively cut them off from mainstream society and close a lot of opportunities off to their children.

How can you be an effective parent in a world and a society which is constantly changing? The best approach is to maintain an open mind and a degree of flexibility. Take the best of the new as it comes and keep core values close " both should be taught to your children.

Getting Help with Colic

By Jessica Biel

Hearing an infant cry is part of life, this is is unable to the baby cannot talk yet to say what he or she wants so the parents have to do whatever it takes to make it stop. Some will over-react and believe there is something wrong with the child, should this occur longer than usual. There are some new moms and dads who will even make a journey to the hospital to see if the baby is OK. Starting in the first three weeks until at latest the fourth month a baby could have intestinal colic which a physician will explain if signs happen. There are various causes why this happens but the only thing that the moms and dads should focus on is how to make it stop.

This can occur at any time of the day from early morning to late at night, and parents should know this. The reason is that there is a difference between the natural clock of a newborn and an adult. The main caregivers will sometimes find that their night time routine is more disturbed than usual, resulting in increased fatigue. A crying baby is not something to neglect, be sure someone gets up to see if there is something wrong. If the infant cries, his diapers may be wet or he may be hungry or perhaps he should be cradled into one's arms and sing a cradle song.

You can never neglect a crying baby and hence you should get up and take a look at the infant and see what is wrong. The baby's diapers may need to be changed or it has to be fed and if this is not the trouble, perhaps holding the baby in one's arms and singing a lullaby can work.

Before placing the newborn in the tub, the temperature of the water should be checked since it could be too hot for their skin. You can hang accessories to help with intestinal colic around the crib or attempt playing a cd in the background. These things don't cost that much and are effective in letting the infant get the much needed rest.

Another good thing moms and dads can do to help their intestinal colic child by carefully monitoring their child's food intake. Some foods are known to develop gas and this is passed on to the infant in the form of milk during breastfeeding. Knowing which products are right to eat can forestall this, but still if it doesn't work, giving Simethicone can be given under such specific circumstances. Raising a child will have its highs and lows - the intestinal colic stage is only the beginning of a lot of challenges that moms and dads will have to go through.

A New Trend in Baby Showers - Co-ed Enhances the Fun Factor

By Edie Mindell

Although you can never go wrong with a classy, traditional baby shower, cute new trends are emerging that have proven to be successful. From serving strictly fondue lunch or dinner items, to hosting a Hawaiian Luau party, these new baby shower trends and crazes are fun, hip, and exhilarating!

Fondue has become a new trend not only for baby showers, but also for all types of events and socials. Melted cheese with crackers and melted chocolate with fruits are light but filling appetizers that will satisfy cravings. Cheese dip can be melted and served with veggies like broccoli and carrots, along with assorted crackers. Many chocolate fountains are inexpensive and can be used to melt chocolate and serve with fruits, marshmallows, biscotti, and pretzels.

The art of scrapbooking has become increasingly popular over the past few years. So much so, that it has become a popular theme among social gatherings and events like baby showers. In recent scrapbooking-themed baby showers, hosts sent out scrapbook-themed invitations to guests, tying into the theme. At the bash, each guest is given a different baby-themed layout sheet, with supplies like stickers, letters, cutouts, glue, and scissors. The guests then design and decorate the layout sheet for the mommy-to-be. All these sheets can then be put together into an album for the new coming baby. This makes a great memory and keepsake for the expectant mother.

Hula and Luau-themed Hawaiian festivities are now ranked as some of the most popular baby shower ideas of this decade. Luaus can be fun and colorful, yet inexpensive and easy on your pocket. Leis can be given out as souvenirs, and you can play tropical, Caribbean tunes as background music. Fruit platters and fun drinks like Pina Coladas and Strawberry Daiquiris will add to the Hawaiian setting. Luaus are original, entertaining, and can fit any budget. Even on a tight budget, you can impress your guests and seem like you spent a fortune on your baby shower.

Another popular tendency in todays society is to host co-ed baby showers. In past times, baby showers were considered a womens affair, therefore, women were the only ones allowed to participate. Today, that taboo has been debunked, and more women are choosing to allow their husbands and other male members of their family and friends circle to participate. For a long time, men were shut out from being able to take part in baby-welcoming festivities. Now, this has become absolutely normal and even encouraged in North America.

Among all the trends and new practices in baby shower events, the most affordable yet incredibly chic seems to be the contemporary simple look. Classy, clean-cut, and simple dcor shows fine taste and a flair for decorative trends. Today, the predominant style for interior design is contemporary chic, and this look can be accomplished even on a tight budget. If you have a knack for planning and design, coordinating a simple and classy event should be a breeze. These days, the phrase "simplicity rules" is key.

When You Need Babysitters to Stay: What To Do

By Rashel Dan

There are times when you would really need babysitters. They are a great help when you have to get back to work after a long time or when you just need a break from it all. Indeed, babysitters are crucial to helping you keep your job and maintaining your sanity.

Although finding reliable sitters is not all that easy, it is also not impossible though. These days, there are many sitter agencies and referral sites that can make your search a whole lot easier. Sometimes a bigger problem would be how to keep good sitters working for you. How do you make sure that you can keep your sitter?

Duties and Responsibilities - One important requirement is to be clear about her duties and responsibilities. Nobody wants to be hired as a sitter only to work at odd tasks. Before she even starts work, sit down with her and come up with a job description. Be honest about the kind of work that she has to do. Although sitters are expected to watch over kids, you may need yours to do a little cleaning or cooking for the kids. Once you have agreed upon a job description, do your best to stick to it.

Briefing on Working Conditions - All other working conditions should be clear. This includes informing your sitter if she needs to stay up late into the night while waiting for you. Whenever possible, attempt to establish a schedule so that your sitter would at least know when she is needed. Sitters have their own personal schedules too so she may have to work around your schedule.

Salary Rate - The salary is always a primary point of concern when you need babysitters. This is also a point that some people take for granted. Not every sitter would be so desperate as to accept low rates. The experienced and older ones may not give your offer a second glance especially since many others need their services. Be sure that the rates you offer are commensurate to your sitters experience and ability. If you cannot afford to pay much, make sure a sitter understands this perfectly.

Rules and Regulations - Set an agreement on your sitters use of your home. You cannot avoid this. If you want to keep your sitter happy, you should at least allow her the use of your living room, television set, telephone and bathroom. Make sure though that your sitter knows how you would like your things and facilities to be used.

Handling Problem Behaviors - If you follow specific discipline methods, tell your sitter about them. There may be particular ways in which you would want problem behavior among children to be handled. If you want your sitter to do it your way, then tell her.

Respect - Never abuse the goodness of your sitter. There may be times when you would need emergency services. Do not overdo it though. You may already be interfering with her personal schedules if you do it too often.

Household with at least one kid need babysitters. There is no doubt about that. If you make sure that you keep the good ones working for you for a long time, then you dont really need to keep on looking for new sitters all the time.

Important Safety Tips if You Have a Toddler in the Home

By Nancy Fair

Accidents in the home are the primary cause of death among children in the US. Toddlers especially like to learn all they can about the world around them with their recently acquired freedom of movement. But all too often, their curiosity gets them into trouble.

Many of these injuries, though, can be easily avoided. Some basic precautions are all it takes. Here are some toddler safety tips that will help to child proof your home.

Throughout the Home

* Large pieces of furniture that are prone to tipping, like a shelving unit, should be fastened to the wall using brackets.

* Doorknob covers are required for any room that you don't want your toddler to enter, for safety reasons or otherwise. They will also keep him from leaving the house unsupervised.

* If you have blinds on your windows, make sure the cords aren't looped. If they are, hang them out of reach. They have been the cause of strangulation among young children in a number of cases.

* Always use protective covers on your electrical outlets. This prevents small fingers and other objects from being inserted into them.

In the Kitchen

Be sure to install safety latches on all your kitchen cabinets and drawers. This helps prevent young children from accessing your cleaning products, many of which are toxic. It also keeps them from grabbing sharp objects like scissors or knives from inside the drawers.

Use the back burners on the stove when you're cooking. Any pots should have the handles turned inward so your little one can't grab them. When you're using the oven, block off access to it to avoid accidental burns.

Bathroom Safety

You'll also need safety latches on the cabinets and drawers of your bathroom. Make sure that cleaning products and medicinal products are locked up safe from your little one's grasp. As soon as you're done with them, unplug appliances like your curling iron or electric shaver. Put them somewhere where your child can't reach them.

If you have a toddler, you need a toilet lock to keep the lid down. Young children have a higher center of gravity and can easily fall into a toilet if they lean in to play in it. It takes less than an inch of water for a small child to drown. So it's essential to supervise them in the bathroom at all times.

Take an objective look at your home to spot any other possible sources of danger. Deal with them immediately. With these precautions and some common sense, raising toddlers can be easy and fun.

Pregnancy After Hitting 40

By Shola Oslo

Pregnancy after 40 for many aspiring mothers can be somewhat daunting and even discouraging. Perhaps this has a lot to do with the numerous misconceptions surrounding the idea of getting pregnant so late in life, which include:

a) Lowered fertility with age,

b) Premature delivery or miscarriage,

c) Having to deliver by c-section, or even,

d) Complicated delivery or birthing a baby with an abnormality or defect.

The notion that these risks are a threat only to women above 40 is outdated and untrue. It is, in fact, a risk that is shared by all women.

Research also shows that there are 40% more pregnancies amongst women over 40 than before due to the obvious changes in lifestyles of modern women and this is bound to increase. If this is not enough to convince a woman over 40 of her improved chances at falling pregnant then perhaps knowing that there are now natural ways that are safe for the body and guarantee conception may help put her mind at ease.

The natural inclination of many women is to take the well-known route of fertility clinics, drugs and operations, quickly accumulating debt in the process. Yet not enough of them have taken into account any type of natural and non-invasive therapy in their quest to conceive.

One definitive aspect of alternative medicine that surpasses the aims of conventional medicine is that it strives to harmonize and enrich one's body in a fundamental way, not just as a quick fix approach to a problem. The options available are numerous, including holistic, natural, non-toxic and various other methods. Some of these are opposed by the modern medical bigwigs who try to impose their views on the world, claiming alternative medicine is untested and unproven. They advise not getting pregnant after 40 based solely on their textbook guidelines and traditional mode of thinking. But the act of throwing those old conventions and notions out of the window has allowed alternative medicine to break new ground and offer people something that conventional medicine can't.

A good example of the folly in quick-fix medicine is recent research into Follicle Stimulating Hormone therapy, or FSH. The hormone is intended to increase the production of eggs-of which a woman has a finite supply. That, coupled with potential low quality eggs, can complicate matters further.

Something worth noting is that science reveals that high FSH levels cause infertility. Therefore alternative medicine seeks to achieve a balance in FSH levels.

And here is where alternative medicine comes in. Where a typical doctors prescription for high FSH would mean popping a drug like clomid for example. In some well documented cases it has had some devastating effects on women especially with borderline FSH, but alternative medicine employs dietary and nutritional adjustments and fertility boosting supplementation with natural products that work to improve egg quality and help induce safe cleansing and detoxification processes.

It is not to say that conventional treatments do not work. They do; but they have also been known to be ineffective and unsuccessful for a growing number of women. It is therefore a much safer and possibly cheaper choice for many women today desiring to achieve pregnancy after 40 to seek out more natural fertility solutions like the Mature Mothers Kit which with the backing of science, has been confirmed to increase a womans fertility by as much as 660%.

Organic Skin Care for Babies

By Amy Nutt

An infant's skin is soft, cuddly and very, very delicate. Despite this knowledge, many mainstream manufactures put harsh chemicals in many leading baby products that are intended for daily use. Seemingly innocuous things like lotions and shampoos can even have carcinogenic parabens or other substances that known to be toxic.

In one alarming study, babies who have been using traditional shampoos, lotions and creams showed a high concentration of phthalates in the urine. Phthalates are chemicals that are added to give plastic more flexibility and can be extremely dangerous due to high toxicity.

Concerned parents needn't worry however, as they have an invaluable resource at their disposal when it comes to obtaining chemical free products: the Internet.

Below is a list of the kinds of products you can obtain (or may need to scrap) to care for your bundle of joy's precious skin.

- The fist thing you need to do is throw your baby oil away! Mainstream baby oil is made with 100 percent mineral oil, a crude petroleum product which can actually clog the pores. Since the skin needs to be able to 'breathe' to release toxins, clogging pores can cause serious health concerns. Vitamin deficiencies have also been reported with mineral oil use, a fact that should be of real concern to parents. The solution? Many herbalist and holistic practitioners advise replacing traditional baby oil with jojoba oil. Jojoba oil is safe for use on even newborns and won't disrupt the skin's natural process. Other organic baby oil replacement products have all natural ingredients like chamomile or rosemary as well so look around before settling on any one item in particular. - Baby lotions have the same types of concerns as mineral oil and contain fragrances that are nothing but a pure mix of nasty chemicals. Alternatives do however exists and if you are so inclined you can find a bevy of organic solutions to the chemical laden baby product. Most of the lotions that are organic in nature will include chamomile and-or rosemary with an aloe vera or jojoba oil base. Be sure that you locate organic items that are 'fragrance free' and 'dye free' too. - Locating organic shampoos and bubble baths is also a good idea since these products can get into the mouth and eyes of your baby. Even so called gentle formulas are chock full of substances that can have long term health affects on developing little ones. You can also look into purchasing organic diapers creams, conditioners and talcum free powers online. Make sure the ingredients are 100 percent all natural and wholly organic.

Before you buy any organic product do you research into the company and make sure your child isn't allergic to any of the ingredients. Read the ingredients lists too, as some companies that claim to be organic still utilize harmful preservatives!

You may also want to take the extra step into purchasing organic cleansing agents like laundry detergent in an effort to protect your child's organic skin care. Although it seems like a bit of extra work, you will be rewarded with a happy healthy child who will benefit from the time and effort their parents took to give them the best care possible.
