Baby shower planning often requires a lot of time and work, but after all is said and done, producing a successful event can be one of the most rewarding experiences a host can have. When she sees the excitement, joy, and fun everyone is having, all the energy expended is returned in spades.
That being said, because of the work involved, the baby shower is usually given by a relative or a close friend of the mother-to-be. The biggest consideration when hosting a shower is will it be a surprise event or will the mom know?
Holding a surprise shower dictates closer communication between the guest of honor and the host. They'll have to slyly set aside time on the mom's calendar so she'll be available for the shower without her knowing what the fuss is all about. And one of these people will also have to create transportation and a cover story to deliver the mom to the event without having a clue about what's going to actually happen. Meanwhile, the host will be tremendously busy greeting guests and keeping the party rolling.
While a planned shower (where the mom-to-be is in the know) requires less coordination, in both cases having a theme for the shower goes a long way in making it a special event. Having a theme helps the host arrange the other aspects of the baby shower like invitations, decorations, food, and games.
How far in advance should shower invitations be mailed out? At least four weeks is my recommendation. This will give family, friends, and co-workers of the expectant mom plenty of time to clear their schedules and plan for sitters. Make sure to have all the necessary information on the invite: time, date, place, contact information, and if the mom's registered, the shower registry.
The hostess will have the honor of greeting and welcoming arriving guests, and the expectant mom should be given a comfy seat since, for the event at least, she's the queen bee! Hand out party favors and appetizers early on. For ice breakers, which are really important since there will probably be a lot of people who need introductions, have some great baby shower games ready.
Before the guests leave, the expectant mom may want to open the baby shower gifts and have her reactions recorded on camera. Someone should assist her in recording the names of the giver and the gift brought for later use in sending thank you notes.
A well-executed, fun baby shower is one of the great joys of hosting any event. Honoring a friend with a celebration is always appreciated, but honoring a friend and her unborn child is even more so! Have fun and I wish you great success!
