A Guide to Buying Baby Cribs

By Bella F Charelston

New parents can find it difficult and confusing when searching for a baby crib. Despite all the fancy features that some models come with it is essentially that you think about the baby's safety above all else. Only then should you start to examine the other features and how the crib looks.

There is a huge selection of different baby cribs available. They can range from plain and simple to extravagant and expensive. Thus the first thing you need to do is know how much you are willing to pay and look at only those that are in your price range.

Any crib needs to meet minimum government requirements regardless of its cost. This will give you the piece of mind that any crib you buy is safe for your newborn. A baby crib can be constructed from metal, wood or plastic.

A handy feature of the majority of cribs these days is the ability to drop down a side. By lowering a side an adult has a lower barrier to lean over to pick up the child. Having two sides that drop mean that you can pick of the baby from either side of the crib.

Another useful feature is the adjustable mattress. Such a crib mattress means that it can be lowered or raised depending on the age of your child. For babies the mattress is left high so you don't have to reach down too far and for toddlers it is lowered so they don't climb out of the cribs.

It is possible to find cribs that can be converted from a crib to a bed. This is useful for when the baby turns into a toddler. Other cribs have storage such as shelves or draws underneath which is useful if you have small room with little space for your baby's essentials.

A local retailer of baby accessories will have a range of cribs for sale. The smaller outlets, including the small specialty stores, may have a small selection to choose form. You may also have to order in a crib. The larger retailers will have a wider range of cribs and will it is less likely that they will need to order in the crib for you.

The World Wide Web can be an excellent resource if you want to find reviews from parents on particular crib models. It is often recommended that you visit the manufacturer's website to see if there is any further information on the product.
