Ideas for First Birthday Parties

By Sara Miller

So it's been almost 12 months? Oh how the days and weeks fly by. It's time for you to start thinking about 1st birthday party ideas. Since your baby can't offer his or her own 1st birthday party ideas, it's all up to you, and there is so much to be decided.

Before you start on 1st birthday party ideas such as activities or themes, decide what the party's location will be and who to invite. As with business, location is the key. The place you choose to have your party, indoor or outdoor, as well as the number and age of your guests, should help you form your 1st birthday party ideas and help you decide the best age-appropriate activities.

Babies' 1st birthdays are usually celebrated by the adults in their lives, including parents, grandparents, and other family and friends. 1st birthday party ideas should be a lot of fun for adults, as well as appropriate for your space. Allowing other babies and small children at the party with their parents is okay, but you should try to limit it to just a few.

Time is another thing that must be considered when you're brainstorming for 1st birthday party ideas. A baby's 1st birthday party should usually be only 1 to 2 hours long, any longer and he or she will probably get cranky. This is also why you should try to limit the guest list to only those who are closest to the baby and that the baby knows well. It also makes it a bit easier to come up with some good 1st birthday party ideas.

With a smaller, more intimate group, you can plan activities that will be fun for everyone and really allow you all to think back on the year and acknowledge how far that little guy or gal has come. For instance, you can decorate a poster-board with photos of your baby at certain milestones, but not arranged in any sequence.

Then you can give paper and pencils to the guests and ask them to write the dates of the milestones and place their entries next to the appropriate photo. This is the most challenging of all the 1st birthday party ideas I've tried, but also one of the most fun!

It's easy to come up with great 1st birthday party ideas when you plan a party with only 7 or 8 guests in mind, the people who love your baby dearly. Shopping for supplies is easy and affordable too, if you get a whole set of theme party necessities online.

Whatever your 1st birthday party ideas may be, finding the perfect theme online will give you more time to focus on more creative 1st birthday party ideas.
