Tickle Me Elmo

By Keneth Londe

Based on the Sesame Street little, furry, red muppet character Elmo, the toy company Tyco created a toy named Tickle me Elmo in 1996. The cool thing about this Elmo toy is hearing his laugh when he is being squeezed and it even gets better when he is being repeatedly squeezed because it also shakes that made the kids enjoy watching it.

The successful released of the toy in the market created a big chaos in the North America. Tickle me Elmo began to be the must have toy of every children but the supply of the toy did not meet its demand causing parents fighting each other just to have a toy for their child. A not so good incident even happened to a Wal-Mart clerk because of the toy.

On the following year 1997, other Sesame Street characters tickle me dolls such as Big Bird, Ernie and Cookie Monster were distributed on the market. Unluckily these products failed to match the number of sales and fame of the Tickle me Elmo toys. Then, in 2001 the laugh of Elmo became silent.

But then in 2006, in American International Toy Fair it was announced that new Elmo dolls will be out once again in the market. The new Elmo doll was called TMX which means Tickle Me Ten or Tickle Me Extreme since it was already ten years ago that the original toy was released. The newest Elmo is even much more entertaining than the old one because it already rolls and smashes its fists to the ground while giggling and begging the tickler to stop.

There are three versions of the Tickle Me Extreme Elmo dolls that had been made. Each is identified through their box container. Elmo has different greetings with each box. One of the boxes has a top secret sticker while the other one contains a warning sticker. The newest one has a hole on its box and does not include flaps any more.

The newest Elmo dolls might once again repeat its history where a guy was reported pointing a gun to somebody and asking for the Elmo doll that it carries. For consumer to avoid this kind of incident they may just want to buy the doll through online purchasing though it may cost them much more rather than purchasing from a toy store in exchange of their safety.
