Many new mothers struggle with issues of baby skin care. While it is not always easy to see your brand new baby with what appears to be red irritated skin, just know that most of these problems are quite common and you can easily treat them by yourself.
The most common skin irritation of baby's skin is diaper rash. This can usually be avoided by changing baby's diaper as soon as possible after wetting. When you can, try to leave that area open to the air for a few minutes. If, despite your best efforts, a diaper rash develops, it is usually easily remedied by applying a little zinc oxide cream.
Reddish pimples that look a lot like acne can be another type of baby skin care that you may have to deal with. This baby acne is caused by the huge hormone fluctuations that your baby experiences after birth. The acne will disappear once these hormones settle down. Acne creams and lotions are not meant for babies and should not be used.
Don't be alarmed if your baby's skin appears quite dry. It is generally just the first layer of skin that is like this, and it will quickly be replaced by the second, moister layer of skin. You can then maintain that soft silky baby skin by using lotions, soaps and shampoos that are very gentle and non abrasive. The more natural a product is the better. Chemicals, fragrances and dyes are not good for baby's skin.
As a general rule of thumb, treat baby's skin with very mild soaps, lotions and shampoos. Stick to ingredients that are as natural as possible, avoiding dyes, fragrances and parabens which can cause irritations.
If baby gets too warm, mild heat rash can develop on the neck, arms, and diaper area. This rash will also go away without treatment once the baby cools down. Try not to overdress the baby, and dressing in layers helps you to adjust clothing to match the environment.
Be careful not to overdress a newborn, Heat rash can quickly develop in areas like the armpit, neck and diaper areas if the baby gets too warm. Again, this is not a serious condition and will go away on its own. Try dressing your little one in layers so you can more easily adjust the clothing to match the temperature.
Baby skin care is easy if you just try to keep it simple and natural. More than anything else relax and enjoy your new baby.
