Cool Baby Shower Ideas " Make Your Own Blankies!

By Tracey Dornelles

What is the best bit about Baby Showers? The Presents! Of course it's lovely to see all your friends and relatives and praise the Mum-To-Be, tell her she's glowing and that the birth will be OK, but really it's the present time that we all wait for. All those cute little outfits that look so small you'd think they were for a doll.

When choosing a gift for a baby there are so many considerations. Is it for a boy or a girl? Should you get something for a newborn or maybe when it's a few months old? Do you get toys or clothes? etc. But out of all the presents at a Baby Shower I think hand made gifts always have the most impact. Mums will always really appreciate something made especially for their little miracle.

And ... after all the guests have gone home, the Mum will perouse her gifts and I guarantee you she'll stop and study the handmade one again. It'll also be mentioned for a long time after the baby shower too. Everytime the baby is wrapped in your handmade pressie you'll get praise over and over.

I have listed a step-by-step guide to making a totally unique present - A baby blankie. It's really easy even if your skills on the sewing machine consist of sewing straight lines.

HAND-MADE BLANKIES!

STEP 1: Go to a fabric shop and find the flannelette material.

STEP 2: You want 2 different pieces of patterned material. They can be match shades or be completely different, be creative. Perhaps do blue stripes one side and green spots on the other! Or pink fairies on one side and white stars on the other!

STEP 3: I usually like to buy about 1.2 metres of each fabric. This is a better size than just a metre.

STEP 4: When you get home sit down at a flat table and start pinning the material together. Make sure the pattern is facing inwards.

STEP 5: Sew straight lines around all the edges leaving a 10cm hole on one side.

STEP 6: Use the whole to turn the fabric inside out.

STEP 7: Tuck the fabric in around the hole so it looks like the rest of the blankie.

STEP 8: Make sure you flatten out the fabric so it sits nicely then sew 2 straight lines around the edge of the whole blankie. This is done for 2 reasons. A) To sew up the hole left when you turned the fabric inside out. B) It makes a nice border.

When you feel brave have a go at doing a different border to make it look pretty.

STEP 9: Roll up your blankie and wrap it. Add an extra note stating it was "Handmade by You"

STEP 10: Present time! Watch the Mum-To-Be's face as she unwraps her specially made blankie. She'll love you for it!
