Tips for New Mothers

By Kelly Jones

So you're a busy mother who just had a baby. You need to get back into shape so you can return to a semblance of normality. There is good and bad news. The good news is that weight loss after pregnancy is possible. The bad news is that you will not have a semblance of normality for a while, especially if you have just had your first baby. I have never known a mother who went to something like a normal life quickly after a new baby. It simply does not work that way.

It seems that everywhere you turn, there is advice for new mothers. Like whether you should be breastfeeding and for how long; whether you should consider organic foods for the baby and which car seat offers the best protection. Often the answers are as varied as the questions themselves.

The advice isn't any more clear when it comes to the topic of exercising. Some are passionate about not exercising for the first two months while others are okay with it providing that you don't over exert yourself. If you do opt to begin working out, be certain to replace any fluids that your body loses by drinking lots of water and keeping yourself hydrated.

After the birth of your baby, your body will naturally be still recovering from the effects of the birth for several months. Your weight may bounce back to your normal levels fairly quickly, especially if you are under 30 years and you were not overweight before pregnancy. Losing weight at this time is important, but there are notes of caution too. Weight loss after pregnancy should be gradual so as not to cause problems for you and your baby.

It has been said that a new mom needs an extra five hundred calories per day to produce the required milk for her baby. It is for this reason that you should not hop on any strict diets just so that you can lose weight more quickly. The risks of upsetting this balance are really not worth it.

You need to make sure that you do not neglect yourself. It may seem challenging to find the time, but with all you do each day you need half an hour to recharge your batteries. If you don't make it a priority, nobody else will either.

Make a list of things you can do in half an hour to an hour and keep it handy. Then when this time rolls around you will be ready. Your list might include reading a book, watching a show, calling a friend or taking a bath.

When you are a new mom time management is critical. It is easy to let the baby consume all of your time, but if you allow this to happen your other relationships can suffer. Find a few reliable babysitters and make sure that you do not neglect the needs of your partner. If you can successfully pull this off, everyone will be much happier in the long run.
